The manual says change the oil the first 5 hours, but wouldn't it make sense to change the filter since the "loose shavings" will clog the oil filter since the engine is new. And its a left over model so that filter has been there for about a year.

Very funny you ask. I just started a thread yesterday with the same question. You have an Exmark just like I do and the manual doesn't specify about the filter, they should you know?

All the replays I got said yes, change the filter too.

Go ahead and change the filter too. You've got a piece of equipment that is worth several thousand dollars.

If you don't change it with the oil it is going to bug you from now that I didn't change the filter too.

I agree, change it, now, and with EVERY oil change.

I know Kohler recommends changing the oil every 100 hours and the filter every 200, but that really makes no sence to me. That filter is about $6.00 if you get them from the right place (Wix) and $9.00 from a dealer. That engine it's hooked too costs $1500 to $2000 to replace... I'll change the filter every time, every 100 hours.

Change the filter as well. I change mine with every oil change. You don't have to, but I do.

changing the filter is probably more important then changing the oil... its where all the "crap" goes so changin oil and no filter all that crap is just gonna get in the new oil. kinda like amsoil or synthetic in a car... you dont have to change the oil for xx,xxx miles but the filter needs changed regularly.... your wasting time and money by changing oil and not changing the filter!

The Kohler engineers said they run break in oil in the factory and drain it before it is shipped, but there were some companies wanting the correct oil in the engine when it was received. When the engine gets to its location, is installed and filled with oil, I was told personally it did not need to be changed until the engine reached 100 hours. I told them the mower manufactures recommended changing the oil after the first 5 hrs. He said this was the procedure until we started running the break-in oil to check the engine thoroughly before it left our facility.

I honestly don't know how much I trust what was said, but the last 28 efi I bought did not get the filter and oil changed until it reached 100 hrs. I use the recommended Kohler oil and change it per there instructions, if it blows up, it will just blow up.
