Typical statement from someone who hasn't spent seat time on one of these mowers and is a newb on these forums. Go test them all, compare what you get for your $$ and make your decision from there. You will get a lot of "my d$%k is bigger than yours" on here. It grows quite tiresome. :hammerhead: In reality all the mfg. you are looking at will provide a solid machine for your needs.
UMMMMM, I don't recall saying my d!@# was bigger than anything there scooter, I was around JD when they first came out with the Ztrack machines, I think they are junk as well, over complicated and over priced.
So I think the fact that Dixie's claim to fame is being able to mow at 25mph is overkill, and I think they price them higher because of this makes me an ignorant prick?
The man asked opinions, you stated yours I stated mine, I didn't slam you for yours, just made mine. At the end of the day he's more informed when he goes to look at the equipment.
I've also got more than my share of "chair time" thank you.

Gotcha.........My apologies but one really needs to choose their words wisely. When you open a statement that they are "junk" and fail to back up why that is I have a hard time believing that statement is based on anything but hearsay. If you have spent "seat time" on these two brands and found flaws I'd definitely like to hear your feedback. While you may not be a fan, I'd say that both mfg's build one hell of a mower. Everyone has their favorites for sure and for many dealer support is key in the equation. There is still no substitute for building a shortlist and then demoing them all on the property to see what best fits his/her needs.

StihlSawing, I think you have a good selection of mowers to choose from. Test them all and select the best one for your needs. As stated, any of these units will serve you quite well as a homeowner for a lifetime if cared for properly. Happy shopping!

The history I've heard with the Bad Boys is weak welds in the frames and the leading edge of the decks bend easily, and we all know what that leads to!

The new Dixons seem to be built on the same frame as the BB, but use even cheaper hydro units, I've heard of 300 hours of less on some of the larger units.

Perhaps "Junk" was a bit harsh. Great for the weekend warrior that mows less than two acres, needs to impress his neighbors with how big his mower is, and falls easily for the large chested woman on TV telling him how much he needs that machine to be macho.
Better?

Cool, much better info. I've not heard that about the welds nor do I see how the leading edge of the deck would bend. The BB decks are all, solid 1/4 inch welded steel (all over). There is also another 1/4" (I think but can't measure since mine is in storage) welded to the leading edge. That's 1/2" of solid steel. I would have to call BS on that. I would wager a guess the deck alone is in the 2-300lb+ range. It's crazy heavy. Overbuilt is an understatement. Maybe someone else can chime in on the bending issue.

As for the welds, I actually checked all that out when I took delivery of mine. Had the entire thing opened up (love the swing out fuel tanks) and was actually impressed with the quality and smoothness of all the seams and welds. Maybe some of the first ones to roll off the assembly line had this but this is the first I've heard of these issues.

I'm assuming you are referring to "Dixie" and not Dixon as that was mixed up in both posts but there definitely are some similarities on design. It's the "less is more" philosophy. There is no fluff built in to either machine. I've heard many comment that they look cheap and I think its due to the fact they are very straight forward designs. If you really check them out you will see this is completely untrue. The biggest complaint I have with mine is the high center of gravity. This has been a gripe from many. No big deal but when you get on a hill it does give you that feeling like you are way up there. They have changed that in their "Outlaw" line which isn't on their site yet. I think they dropped the seat 4" or so.

No, Dixie makes a quality machine, but they seem to price them on being able to run 25MPH.

The old Dixon's where great for what they were built for, a good solid homeowner ZTR that just flat worked and was reasonably priced.
The new "Dixon" mowers don't reflect that at all and are just a cheap copy of everything else on the market sold and priced by name alone.

And yes, my problems where with the early BB mowers, glad to hear they have stepped it up, I'll have to go demo a new one now to see the improvements.

BTW, I really want a Wright 42" stander, problem is I can't find someone to buy me one yet:laugh:

Stihl Sawing, honestly bro, I wouldn't listen to anyone on this site about their opinions on mowers. Their just gonna tell you what they think of their mowers........and of course their gonna say that their the best mowers out there! I know......I'm guilty of it too! I run wright standers and i personally think they are the best mower out there! Your best option i think man, is to narrow down your choices that you want to purchase, call your dealer and set-up a demo so you can see for yourself how the mowers handle ie: cut quality, speed, horsepower, durability, responsivness and when you've made your final decision, you'll know that you got the right machine for the right job.

Wow, Didn't mean to start a war here. i'm gonna go with one of the three, bad boy, hustler or dixie mainly because of the service and dealers in my area. When i get the time i will really check their warrantys and prices and look closely at the decks. i take good care of my stuff so it won't get abused. It will get used a lot in the spring and summer. Appreciate all the replys, ya'll have givin me ideas on what to look for. Once again Thanks.

Rick.

You do the research Now that you've got some industry Leading MFG's to look at and you decide. Also find out the mfg's history on how long they've been building ZTR's. Good hunting. Be glad to help in any way I can.

We have a local fab shop that makes their own walk behinds with sulkies on the back, I'll try to get a picture when I get up there, they started by making walk behind bushhogs for hunters, my buddy had one and it was like a tank, it was fabbed from heavy plate steel and had a 25 hp motor, electric start and tires like an ATV, the thing was a monster and wicked fast! Another thing it had was a central grease port for the spindles, they had stainless lines going to them and all you had to do was grease it from the top. I have often thought about stealing that idea for my own machines.

Jd walk behind and small tractors are junk though , I have had a lot of different machines owned Deere and Bobcat, Hustler , Exmark and the Deere was always broke ...
Ya, iv had a few deers. They are solid but break more then id like.

Get a fabed deck to. I have wrecked countless mower decks hitting stumps, rocks etc... You can tell a lot about how a mower will hold up just by looking at it (within reason).

It is a rumour however I do know in this area that you could not even get a dixie from the factory until it was paid up front. They had none built at the time which was last year. I was told that the bank holding the note on the company put a stop on building ahead and you might also talk to lucas oil as they pulled out of dixie. Something is not right with that company at this moment.

Bad boy does build them "overkill." The only way I see that deck being bent is if it comes off your trailer at 70mph.

Some is welded by hand but most of the welding is done by robots. It reminds me of auto manufactures. They are fast and consistent.

All the fabrication, painting, etc are done in house. That is how they can keep their cost down. The frame is different than any others. They do not cut corners.

Look into Bad Boy, compare it with others then make the decision yourself. If you ever are in northern Arkansas (Batesville), swing by. They will be happy to give you a tour. It's well worth a trip.

I have a Toro Z255... for several years now... the only thing I did to it was add a suspension seat.. it just cuts... I have a neighbor that has a ztrak JD.. and yeah it has some bells and whistles... but it seems too complicated... he also has a JD tractor.. and boy is that thing loud and runs rough... I have a kubota tractor ( well 3 of them) and they all run quieter and smother... and have A LOT less plastic on them than the JD
