Have a new Honda HRX217HXA mower due for its first oil change and getting confliciting info on if I should run Mobil 1 synthetic or stick with the conventional Honda oil. Lawn place I purchased mower advised against. But other people tell me to go with it. Any feedback?

I've read, and been told to wait until the rings have been broke in or set. That take about 50 hours of run time. I've used Mobil 1 synthetic in my 16 hp Vanguard for 11 years now. But I waited for the engine to brake in. Good stuff!

Yep, 50 hours then switch over to synthetic. I personally like Amsoil, ( http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ase.aspx ) but I'm sure Mobil-1 is just as good. Some people swear by Opti-4 also.
Most commercial guys run synthetic, but it's probably even more important to a homeowner because most don't change their oil as regularly or else only once a year. Synthetic does not break down as fast as conventional oil.
In a $800 mower, I'd want the best and stick with synthetic. That dealer sounds suspect in his knowledge if he's telling you to stay away from synthetic.

I'm pretty sure the oil sold under the Honda label is full synthetic.
Nope I was mistaken. From the Honda Power web site FAQ:
"Honda engines are developed, tested and certified with petroleum based motor oils as a lubricant. Any motor oil used in our engines must meet or exceed all oil requirements as stated in the owners manual to include the recommended oil change intervals."

Running regular oil first is a myth. ALL high end cars come from the factory with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is NOT more slippery than regular oil it just lasts longer before the long chain molecules break into shorter length ones. Using regular oil first won't hurt anything but it's not necessary. :drinkup:

I agree wholeheartedly that running regular oil first, might possibly be a myth. But I do know that my total seal (http://www.totalseal.com/) instructions say to NOT use synthetic until rings properly seat or leakdown/blow-by can possibly result. Without opening up a whole new argument, I'll take their word on it.

Upon further investigation i will run the Honda oil for one more oil change then switch to the Amsoil ASE small engine oil. (I think)

Any major brand of 10w30 will work fine. Use synthetic if that's what floats your boat! The main thing is to change oil at regular intervals...50hrs max.

Yeah I am a AMSOIL fan! Good oil, I use AMSOIL in all my 4 stroke engines. I have switched to Motul in the 2 stroke motocross bikes, engines look clean on the teardowns and the bikes respond well to oil ratios and don't have any fowled plugs. As Tigerfan did say most any brand name oils will serve you well, but oil is like anything else, people are brand loyal and everyone has their brand!Upon further investigation i will run the Honda oil for one more oil change then switch to the Amsoil ASE small engine oil. And here is a link from Red Line Synthetics telling you to use conventional oil during break-in. This subject is gonna be arguable/debatable for the next 100 years. I honestly believe there is no 100% fact-proven answer to this question. Use whatever makes you happy!
