Looking to put down a light application of iron, noticed the last couple a years my fescue is not the same deep green and with my doing it a bit different this year not messing with a combo product which had iron in it.

The PDF I found for ironite shows a 11.5 application rate which I know how wide open that would be on my spreader and just seems to be a bit heavy in my opinion.

Can I get you guys input, never put iron down before but I'm thinking about going with half the recomended rate?

Don't worry about it. Ironite is one of the most forgiving products I have ever tried on turf. It is hard to mess up the application other than applying it to acid soils that do not need it, adding it to soils where trace elements are borderline toxic, not putting down enough if you actually need, or not watering it in enough. On the other hand, you had better know what you are doing if going with liquid iron.

The guy at JDL called this morning, found a Iron product he'd like me to concider, comes in a 50 Lb bag so he e-mailed me the label.

Ordered 2 bags.

I used 3 bags of this 2 weeks ago. Unfortunatly, i am still getting used to what to use with what for whatever applications i need. Basically i dont know what i am doing yet with this stuff and trusting the HD or Lowes guys.

Would you give me a quick rundown on what exactly the numbers mean and when to use which numbers?

I think my setting was 9?

Thats the one I was looking at first, the label indicated 11 setting for my spreader and I was like Uhhhh ;)

I didn't like that, I was going to need 5 bags (200 Lbs) and what I ended up with from JDL was 2 50 Lb bags (100 Lbs) just sounded a bit more "normal" or within the scope of sounding like a recomended rate.

This is my first time using it Tha5150 so I'm expanding on my learning now, but 9 means 9 Lbs/1000

Thanks, Kirk.

any info on the numbers and what they mean?
Which numbers are you refering too? On the label or your specific spreader?

Nitrogen potash sulfur

the three numbers refer to the percentage of these main elements.

nitro promotes growth which in turns greens up the lawn. the other to elements promote thickness of lawns and root growth.
All the good ferts have a percentage of iron. Chealated iron is what makes a grass green without really making your plant grow fast.

There are other products out there that contain iron and will not stain concrete or other hard surfaces, but they tend to be way more expensive.

kirk, hope all went well on your surgery. so, do tell what price you paid for such a bag. i am very interested in that type of application. thanks

Thanks for this. So 2nd number is thickness and 3rd is root growth? or just a combination? Someone told me the best all around bags to get are the 6-6-6 ones. true?

I go in next Thursday for Pre-Op, I guess thats like paperwork, insurance and instructions prior to day of surgery and they cut the following Monday feb 20th.

As for the iron, was $40 for a 50Lb bag. Not bad concidering it was $20 locally for Ironite's brand 40 Lb bag.

The Lesco Iron Plus is a good product in my opinion compared to other products like ironite as you are getting not only the dose of Fe but you are also getting all the other micros with it. If you color issue is related to micros this product should help resolve.

I agree. Michael turned me on to this mix last year. The micro package is excellent for getting the best color from turf. Be advised Iron is depleted pretty quickly so a quarterly app may be needed. :usflag:

Grassman - It seems that the southern soils get depleted of Mg, Mn rather quickly - so repair as needed is a good thing and this product offers the ability to do so with out buying tech mag etc etc. which have a high cost.
