Been lurking for a few months here on the forum and gathering great knowledge/wisdom. I am working on developing my plan "B" to maybe make the move out of the corporate grind in a few years.

So the question is, when there is a no soliciting sign on the door, is it okay to leave a flyer/hanger? I feel like I am not directly bothering them, just giving them the opportunity to contact me if they are interested. On the flip side, does it make my business look bad by directly ignoring the sign?

Thoughts and experiences appreciated.

It is completely legal to leave fliers. You are not soliciting.

When you knock on the door and solicit. That's when you have problems.

Chances are where "no soliciting" signs are is where you WANT to work.

'no soliciting' technically isn't a "legal sign"

It's just a sign saying "go away".

It's not a stop sign, or a no firearms sign.

It carries no weight and isn't backed by a law.

It's pretty much a request.
However, if you aren't respectful of a clients request, what makes you think they would choose you as a vendor in the first place?

"oh this guy just ignored my sign, I should hire him! he's a good trustworthy guy!"

I asked this same question years back. Definitely no knock on the door...total no brainer. As for leaving material...it depends on the vibe honestly. Not trying to sound mystical here but that's how I play it. 60/40 or 40/60 percent of the time I leave it. When I have hired folks for this I flat out tell them the same. :)

No one believes that on this site. It is the truth.

I have been hired by those who have had "no solicitor" signs...when I have left XYZ marketing material. I have clients who have those signs and typically they most always say this applys to door knockers.

I'd put it this way, I've landed many accounts from flyers where they had "no soliciting" signs, but have never had anyone call and complain about receiving a flyer/door hanger even with a sign.

Like others have said, just don't knock and bother them personally, if they aren't interested it's extremely easy for them to throw away half a page of paper left on their door.

I wouldn't suggest anyone take this ^ as legal advice unless you can afford the fines.

Around here, you need to apply for a permit to solicit - and yes, that means walking around leaving flyers whether you knock, or not.

Some municipalities do not allow it PERIOD. There's a nice area not far from where I live that WILL send a patrol car if someone calls to report you.
My first year I called several local municipalities to find out what was what rather than just doing whatever I want. Only one had a "no solicitation" policy - ALL the others required a permit - some only required you to fill out paperwork, while others required fees.

I have several friends that have taken hoa, towns, and cities to court.

They have won everytime. Because like t said. They have no legal meaning. Your right to advertise is protected under the free speech for corporation.
