Model: FX600V AS08-R
E/No: FX600V A04147
On a 2010 Gravely Compact Pro 44" approx 1000 hrs.

I first noticed the engine running rough popping and surging at mid revs, but seemed to run ok at WOT.
I parked it up, and have cleaned the carb (was a bit of water & debris in the bowl).
Pulled the spark plug leads and #1 cylinder is running rough right through the rev range.
Adjusted the valve clearances, reset ignition coils air gap and replaced spark plugs. Still rough
Bought 2 new ignition coils and fitted them today and #1 is still erratic.
Did a compression test and #1 showed 100psi and #2 showed 95psi.

I'm at a loss as to where to look now.
Since #2 cylinder runs perfectly throughout the rev range, I tend to think it's not carby (single throat carby) unless something is going on in the manifold?
Could the wire from the start switch to the coils cause probs. It is a common wire to both coils so I'd have thought both would be affected?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Been riding steep hills lately?

No long pulls. Just the occasional banks that I mow across the slope, but they aren't long.
Yeah but how steep you can cross the point to where the oil goes to one side and the other cylinder is running dry.

Southerntide: I'd say 20 degrees would be the max, and rare, and it's been doing these since new.

Patriot: I'll have to check that out. That means pulling the head off or is there another way of checking?

Thanks for the replies.

Look around the intake gaskets for signs of a leak. When the engine is running spray some carb cleaner around the intake gaskets and see if anything changes in the way its running. And honestly even if you dont see any changes or signs...replace the intake gaskets and see if that changes anything. The small block's have had some issues with intake gaskets(481,541,600). Its fairly easy to do and the gaskets are cheap.

Thanks Pugs. I'll look into that too.
Might take a while before I can post up results as parts seem to take about a week to get to my town. Mowing season is pretty much over for me and I have a backup anyway so no lost income. :)

Just an update on this. It took forever for the correct gaskets to turn up and I just got to look at it again today.

The problem was as pugs suggested. The intake manifold gasket on #1 cylinder.

Thanks everyone for all your ideas.

Thanks to this post I hours away from a months long problem before I brought it to a shop. Went to look at my intake and found that the choke was sticking. I must of had 2 compounding problems bad coil and intermediate sticking choke on my FX600V.

How did you fix the sticky choke? Some carb cleaner?
Wasnt dirty just a defect. I just start it without choke or give half choke and then manually push it back after getting off mower.
