Please help me try to decide what to buy. I'm 2 yrs into being into the lawn mowing business in florida, and I will never mow more than 20 yards per week. I want to buy a zero turn mower, but you also need to know that I don't have a backup mower, unless you consider a self propelled mower a backup mower. I'm not mechanically inclined in regards to doing my own repairs. I have $5,000 cash, and I will have to borrow money from my parents if I buy brand new. Which mower should I buy?

2006 Scag Tiger Cub
48" deck
Original briggs 24hp els engine, 110 original homeowner hrs.
Price is $3,500 cash.

2014 Wright ZTO
48" deck
kawi fx 22hp
Price is $6,500 + tax.

I would buy the Scag... 110 hours is NOTHING for a commercial grade ZTR. You won't have to repower it. You'll have money left to set aside for other equipment you might need or to save.

5500 will by a full commercial mower with plenty of life left in it. Keep watching CL. Better yet go visit a few dealers and see what they have on trade in. I think Gravely, Big Dog, Bad Boy and a couple others have new ones in that price range. Snapper has a model for that price. Look around there should be a lot out there.

In regards to snapper, my local dealer quoted me a snapper pro s50xt, 48" deck, 19hp kawi fx, for $5134.93 after taxes. I just don't this is as much of a commercial grade mower as the scag or wright zto.

Id imagine craigslist will begin filling up with commercial mowers in the coming months. You shouldn't have any trouble at All finding a good commercial unit for $5,000.

your buying at the right time. maybe wait a month if you can and take your time

nothing that has cub in the name is a commercial mower.

if you have good credit you can usually get zero interest for 2 years at most good mower shops. I know some people are against using credit but if used properly its a valuable tool and will let you buy a damn good mower that will have a warranty and probably not give you any trouble. PLUS it will have more re sale value when you decide to sell it.

ALSO: the added value of buying new is it will start you with a relationship with a shop which can be very valuable.

but if your set on used take your time. there should be plenty soon and they will move slow

I think your confusing Cub Cadet with the Scag Tiger Cub which was a full commercial mower and just got renamed. I ran them for several years and got over 4000 hours from them. The Scag Freedom Z is their low end commercial.

I see now I was wrong but thats not what it was. I looked at scags last year and just plain confused the cub with I think the freedom. The cub caddet thing might have tarnished my memory a bit too :dizzy:

On this 2006 scag tiger cub with only 110 total hrs, should I be worried about any other major parts that would be in bad shape because of the mower being 8 yrs old? In my mind I'm wondering do parts on a mower start going bad just because of the age alone of this mower?

I would check the belts and tires good. Its unlikely but sometimes rubber parts degrade from sitting. Mostly where they were sitting more than the age. It should be in near perfect condition, dusty at most. I really liked mine. Heavy duty build in a smaller footprint. Best upgrade would be a suspension seat.

Hoping for an update on the 2006 STC that had only 110 hours on it in 2014.

I am at that “repower or replace” point on a 2008 STC48V (Briggs 26 hp ELS... that made it to 1200 - 1400 hours before starting to weaken or have chronic health concerns. I was warned of that motor being a POS for at least the past 5or6 years. I love my
Scag Tiger and i was very happy back when Scag dropped “Cub”, as I obviously wasnt the only one being annoyed by novice yard boys who seemed to LOVE to Mention that they “bought a cub, too”. I bought my first Scag later that New Years Eve for maybe $6000. The briggs ELS was supposed to fix all the failures/ filtration struggles/ failures I had read and heard all about. ...Imagine when ELS motors began failing. Needless to say, I have been very maticulous with maintenance, fuel quality, air filter swapping or cleaning, greasing, keepinhetc. Briggs said take care of it and it would go well past 1000 hrs. They were right on that! I cant complain! Plus, the Scag is in awesomw shape and still has the cleansst cutof any mower around us on any given day. Cub wasnt a good name for this thing anyway! Its more “Mike Tyson”, as he worked his way up to World Heavyweight Champion by Making short work of all the “serious heavyweights.”

So yeah... i think ill repower to new Briggs Comm Turf maybe? Like the idea of keeping this one as long as feasible. Suggestions?
