First oil change on this great little machine. It fits through small gates and goes right under tree branches.

I'm wondering what brand and type of oil I should use.

Maunal says I can use SAE30 or 10w30. Do I need synthetic? I want to use 10w-30 but apparently that will increase oil consumption which is probably true as I have noticed on other mowers.

Also should I change the oil filter? This is the change with just under 10 hours on it.

Yes, always change the filter with an oil change.

Otherwise it's like taking a bath in water after a dozen other people have.
I always recommend synthetic. The quality of oils has come a long way and they give that extra measure of protection against thermal breakdown. Prices are much better on synthetics nowadays.

I'm on my 3rd ZTR now. One with a Kohler engine and the last two with a Kawasaki. I have always used Amsoil's 10w-30 small engine oil (synthetic) and never had a problem or one than needed oil added between oil changes. I use a synthetic in everything including my vehicles and two stroke engines. May not be needed, but I like the extra protection particularly in air cooled engines because of the extra thermal breakdown protection provided.

i have the same mower but the 52". I contacted Hustler and asked what the person I was emailing what he used in his Hustler and he said he uses Mobil. From what I understand you shouldn't use synthetic oil on a new mower until you reach a certain amount of hours. I'm using Mobil Super 10W-30 Conventional Motor oil in my Hustler Raptor. But I only have 10 hr's on mine since it is new.

Anyone know of a spin on adapter for the kaw that would allow for an oil cooler and a larger filter to add capacity ?

I picked up a sandwich-type adapter from AMAZON, and a buddy of mine donated a plate-type external cooler ... it's all put together, just need to make a mounting plate to support the cooler over the motor. I talked with a Kawasaki tech. who said it was a great idea, and that there is absolutely no downside to the mod. as long as it is done properly ... no leaks, etc. My John Deere service manager said he didn't think it would affect my warranty, but, just to be safe, he said I might want to remove it from my ZTR if it ever needs to come in for warranty service. He said he can only judge it based on how it comes in their door, and if the mod. is gone, there's no question.
