Only showed up about 2 years ago & now its a pain in my a$$. Turf looks great except for the burnweeds comming up over nght.. How do u guys deal with it???

I used to cuss and slam things around.

Now I just turn my phone off for 2 months and refuse to look at lawns as I drive down the road.

Hey Volman, American Burnweed, a.k.a. "Fireweed" is a pain in the arse to be sure. I've been dealing with it annually for better than 10 yrs now. It is nothing short of a plague whose infestation becomes worse each year. It's a weed that germinates in the thatch, not the soil and also later in the spring. Because germination time generally occurs long after pre-emergence has been washed into the soil, earlier pre-emergent apps do not control it. Fortunately, it is an easy kill. Unfortunately, it has to be sprayed to be gotten rid of. I usually run a .80oz/k rate of 3way type herbicide and get great control.

Explain to your customers the germination process I just explained and most will be understanding. This won't change the fact that the lawns infested will have to be sprayed and my guarantee to my full program customers is a virtually weed free lawn and this includes Free service calls. This means I run them as service calls when contacted by the customer. I try to avoid this by getting to my customers next app as soon as possible this time of year so I am at least leaving a bill and not just running circles.

**Of course, my earlier post was meant to be a joke** Good Luck

Thanks Ted for your reply. It just really showed up bout 3 years ago & a pain in the a$$ is a understatement. It usuall shows up right after my 2 round, but with this years unusual conditions I'm about 3 weeks ahead of normal, so Im starting rd3 about the time the calls have started rolling in. Most customers understand but I really like to drive into a neighborhood where I have accounts & they look the best. Also seems to show up where the turf is managed? Maybe picking up fert. With this broadleaf growing in the thatch where pre's wont get it, and poping up over night, I guess i was looking for simpathy or some kind of new trick

Bump. Burnweed popping up due to prolonged cool weather. Bermuda and zoysia stays thin from dormancy and burnweed takes off in between rounds and the calls start rolling in. It's a major PITA. Of course, these customers never aerate. Never dethatch. That's my new upsell.

Of course it's easy to control. But when you have other things that need to get done and 700 yards have burnweed popping up and two guys to deal with it, it's a huge problem.
I feel your pain....
