Hi guys hoping to get some good information here. Ive been cutting grass 12 years in NJ but just started fertilizing this year. Ive been spraying weeds in grass with "Surge Broadleaf herbicide for turf" it kills some weeds but not all weeds, it actually doesnt kill most of the weeds. Kind of frustrating to charge customers and its not really working. I started off mixing the surge to the specs listed, in my 4 gallon backpack sprayer. After i saw it not working well I started mixing it stronger but still didnt work. also tried spraying the weeds with a very heavy coat more then recommended, didnt work.

Anyone have experience with Surge?

What is the best of the best herbicide spray you can recommend?

What is a good plant and shrub liquid fertilizer you can recommend?

Read the label. It will tell you, what it does.

"-- to the specs listed in my 4 gallon backpack sprayer."
Not good enough. Get your license, professional equipment and learn how to calibrate it. Put in a gallon and spray concrete with water. Measure the area you covered. That is your sqft per gallon. Mix according to the square feet covered.

A three way product, mixed at the maximum allowed rate per thousand sqft, will kill most weeds. Don't expect it to kill crabgrass or nutsedge. Learn the names of the top 20 weeds in your state. Don't plan on killing spurge at this date.

Talk to your chemical dealer before Thanksgiving. Make sure you have your weed control and crabgrass prevention program planned out in advance.

How about identify the "Weeds" Then choose the proper product. With out identity how do you know if its on the label and how does anyone make a suggestion to help you?
What he said.

Surge works great for what the label says it will kill.

Are you licensed to kill? Weeds, that is.
Do you have your pesticide and fertilizer licenses?

I use super trimec and turflon mixed together expensive products but work very well, I do a blanket application in early spring (1st app) do some spot spraying on the second app if needed and another blanket app in the fall
This combination pretty much covers all broadleaf weeds,I add two oz per gallon one oz trimec one oz turflon and a surfactant in a backpack sprayer, As Riggleplc said you should calibrate your sprayer, you really should know how much per thousand your applying,I don't know the use rates in nj watch your amount of product you use per thousand sq ft
I don't know how large or small your properties are when I started out I found using a pump style sprayer with a single nozzle I was not getting the proper coverage,I purchased a gas backpack sprayer,a extension for the spray wand and a three nozzle boom with flat fan nozzles and a 20psi regulator between the wand and boom it gave me a 3 to 4 ft wide spray width holding the boom at about six to eight inches from the turf and walking a normal to slow pace I had excellent results.
Don't forget to use surfactant and no watering for 24 hours after app.Agri-star makes a generic turflon called Triclopyr 4e, half the price. Hope this helps best of luck
