My state handles "homemade" and professionally manufactured trailer registrations differently. I forget all the details, but be sure to check with your DMV before you have someone go and weld up a trailer for you. The guy who built mine had a trailer design that had already gone through the DMV process and I just had him build one up for me with some material and minor design changes. It goes a lot quicker when they have a jig set up for laying them out and welding them. I would think that it would be cost prohibitive to have a fabricator do it all from scratch, without having a design and jig already.
totally right... the company I dealt with does mostly mining equipment, but will do custom stuff too. They probably build 30 or so trailers a year. In WV if you do a "homemade" trailer to get a DMV title and registration, the trailer has to pass a state police inspection, which if a fabricator knows what they are doing, they should do all of this before you sign off.

I'm a homeowner with a ZTR, so I won't really be using a trailer for it very often, but I wonder if any of the landscaping pros have an opinion about the Home Depot Karavan open landscape trailers. They seem to me to be ok except that in the HD posted reviews there are complaints about the ramp being so short, a ZTR mower deck hits the trailer's floor and ramp interface. I sent email to the manufacturer and they seem to be aware of the problem but not very interested in correcting it by providing a longer ramp. Looks like the ramp angle is about 30 degrees. Would any of you buy a trailer like that for daily use?

If you can adjust deck height from the seat you should be fine. On a couple of our fixed deck Standers I have found that unless you can hit it from an angle, you will scrape.

Really not good if you hit the spindles on a homeowner model

I just had a 6.5x12 with 3500lb single axle built by Stag trailers for $1075. I couldn't be any happier with it. I bought the tongue box from a Rice trailer dealer which covered up my swivel jack sleeve so I had to have another sleeve welded to the side. No big deal.

I never before heard of a CornPro trailer, but now that I have it looks very nice. But you're right about it being expensive. Too much so for me and since the nearest dealer is 120 miles from me, I'll let it pass. Thanks anyway.

Hey Stripe, who sells that toolbox you've got mounted on the tongue?
I had the trailer built by Stag trailers but there's a trailer dealer here called McCurry that is a Rice trailer dealer,.. they removed a toolbox from one of the Rice trailers in their yard and sold it to me for $150 flat. Which is a great deal. I'm assuming many Rice trailers come standard with that box so I'd search Rice trailer dealers in your area.

Yes the pricing is higher and a good deal higher then most 6x12s

My Post #22 above was to get opinions from those who use trailers a lot of Home Depot's Karavan trailer.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Karavan-2237-lb-Payload-Capacity-Trailer-KHD-2990-60-10-PR/301278168

My specific concern is that some who bought it complained that the ramp is too short which caused such a steep angle when down that a ZTR deck will hit the intersection of the trailer's floor and ramp, which sounds like a serious defect if that does indeed happen. I'm still undecided about buying it and the price of $1147 isn't really all that great IMO, especially compared to the green one Mr. Stripe had custom made for him for $1075 which is not only bigger but also looks like it is better built. I wish I could find the same thing here in NJ.

First off, thank you for the compliment on my trailer! Yes I'm happy with it.
Secondly, I just visited the link you posted & now I remember that while shopping at Home Depot iv looked at those exact trailers with the sides that drop. Do not settle for that! The sides link together with lynch pins or something of the sort. You won't like listening to the sides rattling together while driving. Also the vertical supports for the top rail are few & far between. The steel quality when I looked at them seemed more to be desired & you'd basically be paying for sides that drop down which basically in my opinion is a function that you'd never use.

I'll also add this, my ramp is 4', and when going up & down with my Scag's iv observed that the distance between the bottom of the deck and the peak of the gate is very small. It almost seems like, "Holy Smokes, am I gonna scrape?" But it never does. So what I'm saying is, if there's reviews saying there's trouble in that area, you won't be an exception and you'll be unhappy. Keep shopping man,. Even if you gotta drive to another town to find a local builder lIke ztman said. Local builders charge a little less because they don't have to mark them up from the manufacturer's prices.

Quality Steel and Aluminum makes a very nice trailer, there is a dealer is in Upper Twp.

Or buy mine! 5x8... want to upgrade to a dump trailer for installs.

thanks for all the advice gentlemen.
i will use the trailer to haul debris, like garden and tree debris. also to haul a mower possibly. but mostly it will be used to transport landscaping materials to the job and plant and tree debris away. Sounds like you all agree that a dual axle trailer will wear tires faster.
i am looking for some good brand names. 6X10 - 7X14 would be ideal i think

thank you very much
almost sounds like you need a dump trailer

PJ is another good brand. They use angle iron side and top rail verse tube like corn pro and no split gate, welds are a bit less but overall good trailer. The Friday after thanksgiving the run a deal 1295.00 or similar for a 6x12 what they call a black out model.

Is that Freehold Upper Township? Can you provide dealer's name, an address or web site? Thanks.
