I use a 60" (fully) commercial z along with a 21hp (offset) 60" pull behind mower for my personal 8 acres for a total (2009) investment of 10K. Total cut width (after overlap) is about 117". Only downside is this setup isn't really practical to move around a lot, and top speed for a good cut is about 5 or 6 mph.

But, it makes 40K for 96" seem RIDICULOUS!
For that kinda money I'd want a dump truck or truck and dump trailerpayup:gmctruck:

The only thing I can figure is that they are still living off their rep from the past when they were THE mower for commercial use, and plan to do so for as long as the market allows them to.
Only thing to add to this post is that Toro is living off Exmark's past reputation.

40k? Can't you get a decked out 997 72" for 25k? If so I would think that would be the way to go. 96" rear discharge deck is not going to leave a great cut, more of a utility cut. The 997 with a side discharge will leave a better finish and more versatile in daily use.

You could probably get the 997R for a bit less... maybe $21,000, 22,000 ... they both have the same engine.

What happened to the days where we ran scag sthm with 61”-72”decks with 22-23 Kohler s and they cut just fine then and they cut just fine now. I still have 3 in my fleet and a buddy of mine has about 27 sthm there still using in south Florida. I think mowers have got out of hand just like trucks, boats etc. but if people are buying then why not keep raising prices. We have new turf tigers our self but the older sthm cut just fine probably nicer than the ztr’s.

Does the deck fold up for transport it doesn't look like it does. lastec had one that was I think 120 where the sides would lift hydraulically to make it more narrow. If this doesn't have that feature what moves it? I don't think you can even get an open utility trailer that width my widest is 80 inches internal width. I have seen enclosed trailers sport that width but then the wheel hubs tend to be inside which would prevent you going to far forward. I suppose a flat trailer with no sides like a car carrier would work but screw that. Looks like its just for golf courses.
By law the widest a trailer can be is 8 feet 6 inch's so it is possible to have one big enough but most people don't I don't even know if anyone makes one

The major advantage of the Exmark is that it uses a Yanmar diesel that will last much much longer than any gasoline engine. and the wings do fold up to be 72 inches wide. Also red-tech has been completely redesigned so it has on board diagnostics and statistics displayed which is really cool.

And the downfall is you have to drop both wings to mow.

And I've tried the "diesel lasts longer" in my Exmarks, both the Daihatsu flaming POS and the Kubota, it doesn't happen. Fuel usage is greatly reduced. Torque is better, but I still was getting into the potential for some expensive repairs on the Kubota diesel when I sold it.

And before it comes up, I have a brazillion other diesels without issues.

I'm unaware of any lift wing zero turn that has the capability to mow with the wings in the up position. Also Yanmar is a far superior diesel company, and to say that diesels don't last longer is a very opinionated statement-the repairs are definitely more but that's with any kind of diesel powered machine.

You might want to learn a bit about the guy you are responding in your post before you give him any advice or lecture him any about diesels, Yanmar included. ;)

The 96" deck is kind of useless for 98% of us that mow. Wings or no wings, diesel or no diesel, it is a very expensive piece of equipment that is pretty limited in the range of where it is useful.
