Working solo, I get to keep everything after expenses. I think someone in my shoes who has been working solo for nearly 20 years should be grossing at least $50K per year if doing maintenance services, more if doing hardscapes/snow removal in the winter. A solo op doing just hardscapes could easily do over $100K a year if the schedule is booked out full.

Yeah but being from NJ 100k ain't that much. Probably can afford a pack of Marlboros and a sixer of bud light after taxes and housing…
And $50.00 lawn cuts.

Is that the going rate up there? I haven't lived there in over 20 years. My brother who lives there was saying that (the $100k thing) a few years ago when I asked him about his profit owning a busy small car repair shop. I just saw him a few months ago and he was asking a million questions about my new business and told me about his lawn hustle as a teenager, in the 90's in our old neighborhood. Said he was getting around $30 or more for small to medium lawns, I don't remember the exact numbers but I'm sure the price increased quite a bit in 30 years.

That time frame would put me in the height of my cutting as a teen. Had about 55 customers max and that's all I could handle. Very tight route. Today I could probably get a little less than 2x more for those lawns and 80% would be EOW. And back then everyone was weekly didn't matter what. And it's what they wanted. By my math I should by now be able to charge a little over 3x that amount. All that to say is IMO owners aren't able to pay themselves what they should have if prices had kept up.

An owner should can/should make as much as he can. He's the owner - it's nobody's business but his own :)

And hey, if teachers have it made (underworked and overpaid) what are you doing in this line of work? Go get your degree, get a job, and live that good and cushy life. Nobody is stopping you? Teachers didn't get "lucky" in any way, or have their lottery ticket drawn. Literally, anyone can do it. So, have at it!

Nothing worse than someone complaining another's job and it's perks, when he or she could have had that exact same job if they wanted to.

Well I mean, they work 9 months a year. Great benefits. Pay isn't bad. And a government pension when they retire. And they almost never get fired because they have a union protecting them.
But that doesn't mean it's for everyone, if you hate kids, politics or incompetent administrators it's not for you

Meanwhile we have middle school aged teens on the forums posting as professionals...

Well listen, since you put it like that, how hard is ANY job?

Lawn care - ride around on a mower in the fresh air
Construction - follow the directions, measure twice, cut once - fresh air again
Train engineer - forward and reverse - how hard is that?
Pilot - play video games to practice, and you have a co-pilot to do all the work
Bus driver - driving around the same town, same stops all day
Running a business - order product, sell product - how hard can that be?

Walk a day in someone else's shoes or the grass is greener on the other side, sort of fits here I think. Been in a school lately? All those rotten kids people are talking about have to be educated. And last i checked, if you gave a kid the choice to go fishing, or go to school, he'd choose fishing.

Parents seem to be getting a pass. But why? Any of you have kids? ARe they good kids? If they are, it's more than likely due to having good parents.

Obviously your a teacher or your wife is a teacher. Look, we need great teachers. Teachers are super important. But union jobs in general are just cushy. They're well protected, and some of the most incompetent people work in them and never get fired.
Good parents are definitely the number one reason kids turn out well. BUT considering most teenagers see their teachers more than their own parents. Teachers play a massive role in kids lives.

If you give kids a choice, they'd rater play a video game.

Kinda hard to do hardscapes solo
It's labor intensive by nature

you could totally just use labor temps on a job by job basis however
