This is one of those situations (again) where it is hard to decide if anything should be edited....

TurfMedic, as a business owner in this industry, I agree with you. Sometimes it is frustrating that people go out and spend more money on equipment, trucks and their "looks" than they would ever consider spending on investments, a house, and education, etc.... and when they have this excessive debt, they need someone to blame for the market being so stingy - so they turn to "scrubs" and even hispanics. It is frustrating to say the least....that is why hopefully those here at LawnSite are learning you do not need to spend $100k before you even get your first phone call.

But as the owner of this site, I also have to disagree about these types of threads being removed. Whether anyone likes it or not, hispanic labor - both legal and illegal - is a definite issue in this industry, and it should be discussed. A lot of the people with gripes have legitimate reasons. When an illegal immigrant comes into their area and drives the pricing down, it is hard to compete, just the same as when a "scrub" does it.

I would hope that the members of this site would be able to discuss this sort of issue without using or implying racial overtones. The color of theior skin or their ethnicity do not have bearing on what it is they are doing in or to the industry - please keep that in mind.

Someone said a key thing earlier, "80 percent of Americans are lazy". With that said, there's a lot of green out there that needs to be cut. Even the scrubbiest scrub charging $15 a cut can't possibly do all them. As with any business we have to learn how to adapt to the changing of the times. Every other industry has to do it. There are always going to be people out there looking for quality work at a fair price, it may take a bit more effort on our part to find them but they're there.

From what I have found in my short existance in this business so far is that the customer that only wants to pay $15-20 a cut (some have huge yards) is also the customer that seems to complain the most. At this point they probably aren't worth my time and stress anyway.

As far as scrubs or immigrants, they aren't going anywhere, some people may not like it, some people don't care. We just have to find ways to adapt or they WILL be the only ones out there cutting.

Whew,

now i know why i got the response i did from 65Hoss when i posed a question on scrub definition over a month ago

"Oh Great. Here it goes again. Fuse is now lit."

Little did I know......

I agree with the argument that a lot of American workers are lazy. During my career working in the auto industry for 32 years I witnessed some of the laziest (sp?) human beings in existence. And they were all of different races and ethnicities. So lazyness is a plague on humans of all colors.
But I don't think that people are born lazy. They become that way because of the environment that they are raised in. If your parents don't teach you the values of honest hard work from the beginning, the only thing you'll ever learn is that being lazy is OK.
Getting to the point about ILLEGAL imigrant labor...it is also a plague on American labor. I'm not talking about legal imigrants that are here on work visas. I'm talking about border busters. And they are not just Hispanics. Illegals from China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Europe and all over the Middle East are getting into this country. These people have got to be stopped by hook or by crook. If the Bush administration continues to look the other way while our borders are flooded with illegals, this country will turn into a third world dumping ground for every country that wants to rid itself of unwanted misfits and criminals. The Canadian and Mexican borders are nothing but a sieve and crossing the border into the U.S. is a joke. These are the people that are saturating the labor markets in border states and causing serious problems for the economies of these states. Border states are forced by federal law to educate and provide welfare and medicaid benefits to the children of these illegals and Joe Taxpayer is footing the bill. If you live in a border state and are having trouble trying to stay afloat in the lawn care business or any labor intensive business that requires little knowledge to perform the work....illegal imigrants are probably a big reason.
