the ICD deck is inferior to a few other decks out there for all purpose cutting, namely the Deere 7Iron, Scag Velocity, and more recently the Gravely Mach. That being said if you are cutting dry grass and not hacking off too much in one pass, that performance is ridiculous. I'd like to see a pic of the underside of that deck. And, are you sure your blade tip speed is up to snuff?

I wanted to give an update. I finally did remove the turbo baffle as it was creating a huge clump of grass/dirt that clogged the discharge chute. The "backside" of the turbo baffle would also accumulate a solid mass of clippings and dirt that would completely fill the underneath of the back portion of discharge blade's "housing".

Once I removed the turbo baffle, the clogging has been substantially reduced but not eliminated entirely. I also saw no change, for better or worse, in the cut quality/performance without the baffle. Clippings are still dispersed the same way.

Cutting at 2" produces a beautiful cut but the deck has to be scraped every time I mow. This does increase the cost of ownership of this mower with regards to time. I mowed yesterday (dry, green grass), scraped the deck completely before mowing, and scraped again once finished to clean out the considerable build up.

I know you mentioned you tried high lift blades, but which ones?

I go back and forth between the oregon 91-638 and 91-628. The 628 is much taller, providing much more lift and force blowing out of the deck. The down sides is that at makes the mower go through fuel quicker and robs some power in hilly situations. The 638 is a happy medium in all these aspects. Both of these blades keep the deck very clean and you will have very very little to scrape off.

Im using a 2017/18 Ferris 3200 w/61" and 37hp briggs BB. Im also mowing in new york. These higher lift blades help greatly in the mornings when things can be damp. The stock blades have great durability, but are very lacking especially when the grass is wet.

I have tried the OEM high lift blades from Ferris, and didn't see any better results. I had tried the Oregon high lift blades on my old f320z, but I never really needed them. The OEM blades on that mower did an excellent job and actually lasted longer and produced a cleaner cut than any aftermarket blade I ever bought for it. I recently bought a set of copperhead blades, and they produce an excellent cut, but cutting it 2 in prematurely wears the blades because they're so close to the ground. While the cut is absolutely perfect, and I can run full stick, I still have the problem of grass clippings. Only now I'm having to scrape the deck after every time I know. Regardless of what Ferris says, I firmly believe that they change something in the design of the deck. There's no way grass sticks to the bottom of this deck and nothing changed. I can cut at 3 in or I can cut at 2 in, but either way I will have a lot of grass clipping stuck to the underside of my deck. What I have been told is that the grasses in the northeastern part of the United States are considerably different than they are down here in East texas. It's quite possible that the high lift blades produce an excellent cut for you and discharge the grass appropriately. But then again, you're using a 2017 mower and this is a 2022. What I have been told from several other folks is that Ferris did change the deck design somewhere between 2020 and 2022, even though they deny it. I'm willing to give those Oregon high lift blades to try though, and just see what my mileage is. Now that I'm mowing it 2 in cut height and full stick, I can get about four full mows out of my two tanks of gas. This is on par with the fuel consumption performance of my old 2019 f320z.

I have the exact same 2022 40hp isx3300 with 61in deck. I have the exact same cut quality issues here in Michigan. It doesn't matter if i cut at 2in or 4.5in. It doesn't matter if i cut at 2mph or 12mph, it quite simply WILL NOT CUT. It's as if there is no vacuum. It leaves tufts n strips of grass behind all over in the cut pass. Blades will only throw grass about 5-10ft away. I have checked pitch and level about 75 times in the past 70 unit hrs. Everything is in spec, including rpms. Ferris actually warrantied my deck and put a new one on this spring. It didn't change anything. Now they have the mower and are potentially going to put a 3rd deck on .

Greetings! I recently created an account to post in this thread and one of the members suggested I make a new post, so here we are. Before I dive into the issue, I want to give a few details:

1. I'm not a commercial lawn care provider. I own and take care of my own 5 acres; however, from time to time, I do mow large properties (3+) acres for folks.
2. I have lived in my current residence for 10 years. My property hasn't changed, it's all flat with no hills, 4 trees, no low/muddy areas. I live in East Texas with native grasses.
3. I originally used a Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 (27 HP Kohler and 54" deck) to mow my 5 acres. It would take me 7-8 hours to mow everything.
4. In 2019 I purchased a Ferris F320z, 37HP VG BB engine, 72" deck. I never made any changes to the deck, the engine, chute guard, etc. All stock. This mower would mow my 5 acres in 1hr, 20 minutes. I could fly over my property at full stick, 2.75"-3" cut height and it cut perfectly.
5. The F320z would discharge grass clippings easily 15' out of the side of the chute. The grass would be thrown so forcefully it would hurt your legs if you stood in the way.
6. I normally try to mow once a week, or twice in the spring if necessary due to rains, to keep the grass under or around 6-9" at the most.
7. Normal cutting height is 2.75-3". Anything higher and snakes can hide in it. I'm surround by woods on three sides, so I don't want them to have a place to hide.
8. The F320z required scraping the deck 2-3 times per season.

With the above being stated, here's my current situation. In 2022, I lost the F320z in a shop fire and bought an ISX 3300, 40HP VG BB, 61" to replace it. I wanted the 72" but the dealer and Ferris both said it was very difficult to get that deck size at time.

What immediately stood out to me with this ISX 3300 was how poor the cut quality was. Even after leveling the deck (as per the manual) with a 1/4" pitch, the cut improved somewhat but the mower still does not produce a clean cut.

I have tried three different sets of blades (high-left (oem), after-market, standard lift (oem)) and the cut quality was still the same. However, cut quality is inversely proportional to speed, but not in way that I expected or experience with my F320z.

If I mow at 1/4 stick, I can maintain a fairly decent cut, but there are still quite few sprigs and strips of grass that are either missed altogether or "torn", not cut. Anything at half-stick or more produce a cut that isn't worth the time of trying to going fast. It's ugly, torn, or just missed altogether and results in having to cut it again. As stated above, my land is flat, so going fast is why I bought the F320z originally.

I originally went back to the dealer twice to address the cutting problem but they said it was cutting fine. I thien spent 6 months going back and forth with both Ferris before Ferris finally set a rep out to my place with another mower, a technician from the dealer, and two other field reps. I was able to demonstrate my cut quality issues in dry grass that was 6-9 inches in height. Nothing wet, no mud, perfectly clean. Quarter to half-stick would produce a great cut with some tendrils and springs missed. Above half-stick looked like crap and full-stick would result in bogging on the engine and the cut looking like a brush hog.

After making sure the deck was properly leveled (it wasn't and the tech took an hour to get it right), the issue was improved, but as soon as I started to go more than 1/4 stick, the quality begins to drop rapidly to point of wasting my time as I would have to cut twice to make it clean.

I pointed out the the grass discharge would be 2 - 3 feet out of the side of the deck, which was considerably less than my 72" F320z. The rep claimed it was impossible my F320z discharged grass like that. I found a YouTube video of a guy mowing ~1' of grass with an ISX2200 and you can see the grass clippings being thrown 2 or 3 times the deck width. Even with the chute guard up, my ISX 3300 won't discharge grass like that.

During the 2022 mowing season, I had to scrape the ISX 3300 every other mow because the grass was clumped and stuck too the bottom. This resulted in clogging, bogging down the engine, and even worse cut quality.

Fast forward now to spring '23. I'm cutting soft, spring grass and flowers. Same issues as last year, but the grass isn't even 9" tall. Cutting grass 6" tall at full stick is again a waste of time. I'm running quarter stick and still missing grass and flowers. Grass clippings are getting tossed a foot or two out of the discharge. There is so much grass stuck to the deck after my second mowing I have to scrape it.

Based on the input from the other members in my original post, I believe the issue is the deck doesn't produce sufficient suction to lift, cut, and then discharge the grass. As a result, grass isn't cut cleanly and what grass is cut isn't discharged fast enough to keep up with the speed of the mower.

In short, even though this mower will go 11-12mph, it's useless because it won't cut grass that's reasonable height and produce a clean cut.

Here are my questions for the community:
1. Have you experienced cutting quality / discharge issues like the above? If so, what size deck? What manufacturer? What HP engine?
2. Did you ever fix the issue? How did you do it?
3. Did you were work with a dealer / manufacturer? What was that process? How did you get them to help you?

I currently have a z3x 72in that cuts perfectly.
My 2 is2100s i had in 2021 with 61in decks cut perfectly.

Are the 61 decks from the 2100s identical to the deck from the 3300?

I want to provide an update. The Ferris rep called me back this morning and informed the issue is "dealer issue" and there's nothing Ferris can do. The dealer decided they don't want to talk to me, talk about the problems I've been facing, or consider a buy back of the mower. Essentially, they don't care and Ferris isn't going to do anything.

I called another Ferris dealer to ask about trading it in and buying something new. Come to find out, Ferris warranties are non-transferrable and once a mower has been financed, they can't be financed again. I'm guessing the second point is for Ferris financing, I'm sure someone's bank would let them finance a used mower, but who knows?

At any rate, a trade in won't give me enough to pay it off. As I was talking to the guy at the dealer, I described the problems I have been having. He was able to explain the reason for the cut quality problems and the solution.

1. A 72" deck has longer blades which turn at a lower RPM. This generates less wind inside the deck which doesn't blow around the tops of the blades of grass.
2. A 61" deck has shorter blades which turn at a higher RPM. This generates more wind inside the deck which blows around the tops of the blades of grass and doesn't lift and cut as cleanly.
3. In Texas, the grasses are thinner blades (costal bermuda, etc.) and are easily blown around in the deck compared to a heavier, thicker-bladed grass such as St Augustine.
4. Reducing the deck height from 3" to 2" would allow for more suction, less wind, and improved cut quality, even at full stick.

What's bizarre is I would not believe lowering the cut height would improve the quality, but I tested it and was able to cut 8-10" grass down to 2" at full stick (12mph) with a difference in cut quality that is night and day! I mowed the same grass at 2" and full stick with a perfect cut that I cut a couple of days ago at 3" at 1/4 stick and missed all sorts of grass.

I can't speak to anyone else's experience, but this completely changed my ability to produce a perfect cut at full speed. His essential point is that a different size decks have different characteristics and you must change how you mow to accommodate the differences.

I hope this is helpful someone.
Yeah it's a reasonable solution that I always use cutting the grass lower. It can't bend as easily and has nowhere to go but to be cut. I've never ever had a problem with my Ferris isx3300! It seems like field grass always needs to be cut twice though. But that's with any of my mowers that I've ever had. The trouble with mowing field grass lower is there's a chance that there's rocks in the field if you don't know it.

I've owned many Ferris ZTR's over the years. 3100,3200, 2200 models. In the last couple years they changed something on the decks, which they will deny directly to your face, and they now cut like a used and abused 80's Craftsman rider. My last one spent most of last season going back and forth to the dealer, who agrees with me, for them and the Ferris big wigs to try and fix. Deck pitch, different striping flap etc. I even tried that as well and multiple different blades, with zero luck. Even tho Ferris denies changing anything, last fall they updated the deck to a new design. If nothing was wrong, and they didn't change anything before why update it? The Ferris rep has blown me off till spring, which is 3 days away, and I really doubt I'll hear from him then. I believe they are to busy getting in bed with Stihl to worry about the consumers who have helped them get where they are today. I WILL NEVER BUY A FERRIS OR STIHL MOWER AGAIN!!!!! My dealer has been wonderful and I just can't believe the lack of support from a manufacturer.
I know this is an old thread, but since it's back to the top of the stack anyway.

I wonder if the change in deck performance from the older Ferris to the new Ferris has to do with Exmark suing them over deck patent infringement.
Legacy Briggs & Stratton Corp. to pay nearly $34 million in decade-long patent lawsuit

"Exmark originally brought the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for Nebraska in 2010, alleging certain Briggs lawn mowers infringed on a 1999 patent for a multi-blade lawn mower design. The claim centered on the use of a baffle to direct the flow of air and grass clippings during operation."

I understand KPS Capital paid the damages to Exmark when they bought B&S out of bankruptcy.

Indiana here, got a 24 3300. Had a 08 3100. Both were 72" decks. New mower is big disappointment. Deck is terrible to clean up belt/pulley area. Loads up bad with grass. Usbs are a terrible setup, get dirty, filled with stuff if you try to use them while mowing. New mower showed up with only half a seat belt, and a bad front wheel, granted, dealer problem. Briggs 40hp sounds like it has a miss until under load, gives off a lot of heat/uses more gas than old mower. Cut quality is good enough for me. Nothing like my old mower, just so disappointing, will be buying something else.

I almost bought one, so glad I bought the 672 Gravely instead. The kawi 39 Efi is a great motor with parker hydro motors.

I have a 2022 61" 3200 with the carbed 36 HP Vanguard engine.

I live in SW Ohio and have mostly fescue with some bluegrass mixed in. I cut exaclt 1 acre. I have no issues with the cut quality at all.

I used to cut with a 17 HP LT180 48" deck JD lawn tractor and that cut was nice for what it was, but when the lawn was thick I had to slow way down to get a good cut, or just double cut it.

I don't run the 3200 flat out, but I run it at least 1/2 stick in the thick stuff and it cuts it perfectly in one pass. It never bogs down or clumps, and it blasts finely cut clippings a good 10 to 15 feet. I have the deck set at 3.5" and didn't adjust anything from when I bought it.

I run Gator G5s on the JD (still use it to edge and cut ditches) and Gator G6s on the Ferris. I ran the stock blades for a while without issue as well.

Strange the variances in performance. I'd be super pissed if my mower performed the way some of you are describing.

How did you get them to warranty the deck? Ferris refused to do anything like that for me. I finally "fixed" the issue by mowing at 2-2.25" and propping up the chute guard with a piece of wood.
