Well whats the capacity for your truck, if you dont know check the manual it should be in there.

 

Where I live. You cannot go over 10,000 LBS max weight , combined weight of truck and trailer plus load. If you do you need to pay for a different weight rating. Your drivers license will indicate your weight rating. Its on the back of mine.

I think the new 3500's have a GVW rating somewhere in the 14,500 range, not 10,000 like the old one tons.

 

Doug is the truck a dually ?

If its a single wheels then your going to be pushing your luck unless you went with Rickson 19.5 wheels.

If the truck is a dually beef the suspension up with more springs or use timbrens. Your biggest concern is braking power so make sure you have a good brake controller or a vacuum over hydraulic set up so the trailer brakes do 90% of the braking.

I don't know what type of frame chevy uses on but you may want to box the frame where the gooseneck hitch sits so when you put 3500-4000lbs of pin weight doesn't buckle the frame.

As for being legal you probably won't be so don't get caught.

 

pawnshop. Your truck proably weighs 9k. The machine weighs 12k. The trailer will weight 4-4500. After spending 2 minutes on GMs website. It looks like you GCVW is 22,000. Your over weight.

 

The gvwr for the GM 3500 trucks are 9900 for the single rear wheel model and 11,400 for the dual rear wheel trucks. hope this helps.

 

you're overweight and you're illegal. im in the same exact boat. i have a 6 ton kubota excavator a 2500HD and i bought a 10 ton gooseneck trailer to tow it. yes i loaded it on the trailer and i moved it once, the truck can definatly move it, but long distance id blow the truck up, but it was too much weight, and very illegal. you need a class A CDL licence to tow over 10,000 lbs commercially. and its a very complicated process. read my post on CutRight Versus the CT DMV. it explains it all in there.

long story short, i was going to buy a 3500 1 ton truck but its not big enough. i ended up basically finding out you need a 6500 to tow that excavator completely legally and you need a CDL class A, may not need the CDL A where you're from, but thats the law in connecticut and some other states.

i sold the 10 ton gooseneck and im just gonna pay somebody to move my machine until i can afford another $50,000 peice of machinery (GM 6500, duramax, eaton-fuller manual transmission, 14' low dump body, 33,000GVWR)

 

Thanks, everyone. As much as I hate to do it, I will also have to pay someone else to move the excavator. Fortunately for me, I am only working in two places right now...just wish I hadn't just installed the gooseneck hitch. I wonder how the heck Ford is rated at 19k for a gooseneck?!?!?!?

For the recoed, my truck is the dually with diesel, but after some research, I see the max weight is 15k...I REALLY don't want to buy another truck anytime soon. Who am I kidding...we always want new stuff...

 

Without getting into a huge discussion on trucks, capacities, and laws I'll give my opinion. Buying the ford won't gain you anything, you'd still be fighting the trailer/ cdl laws etc. Could you do it with your truck? Well, I've done about the same thing as you with my 3500 with dump body and 6.0 gas. I'm also registered for the weight and you know I still don't know how legal I am. I wouldn't worry about the truck but more-so dmv. I've tried to get an explanation from dmv/police and none have fully agreed on the exact laws. I think its like the infield fly rule in baseball, everyone has a different opinion as to what it is and but no one will tell you exactly what the deal is and sign their name to it. I've found that often, it easier to make one call, get the rig moved and worry about something else, although the convenience of being able to move your own stuff is nice.

The 22,500 # you just gave is the gross combined weight rating, not gross vehicle weight. Gross Combined Weight Rating is the weight of the vehicle plus the weight of the trailer with equipment.

 

the gwr of my truck is 11,300 and that is a single wheel. the daully is 13,000
