Ageing Kawasaki Fh601 has sent fan into orbit - can I still run it gently?

Hi all,

I'm a small acreage owner from Australia who has found this site to be very helpful in trying to keep an old Fh601V running on a Great Dane. After a carby switch it's been running very nicely until today the top of the engine let go and sent the fan, fan cover and part of the plastic engine cover into low orbit.

It appears that the bolts or studs that secure the fan bracket to the flywheel rusted or sheared from age. The engine has been a source of trouble for some time and I think this is the final warning that it needs a replacement, but replacement engines are scarce at the moment and now we are about to go into the holiday season I can't get an engine switch done immediately.

Does anyone know if I could run the engine without fan and without much of the plastic cover if I take it gently; ie avoid the hot hours and working the engine too hard? Since the engine is already due for replacement I'm not worried about shortening its life; I just need to keep 7 or so acres mowed until a replacement can be fitted.

What would be the symptoms of an overheating in the air cooled Kwaka? I am aware of the following;

  • engine shutdown or lockup;
  • loss of power when giving throttle;
  • black smoke;
  • backfiring under load;

If I shut it down when these symptoms appear, will that avoid fatal damage for a while? Actually, should I shut it down or let it idle for a while and then turn it off and let it cool properly?

I will ensure that the grass is kept off the fins, but is there anything else that can keep it running without the fan? I can't get a new flywheel or fan before the holidays shut everything down for a couple of weeks.

I could ask what sort of engine to use as a replacement but I think that may be a bit controversial.... :)

It's an 'air cooled' engine......can you rig the fan back on? Large washer? JB Weld new screws in to hold it? Rig 12 volt fan on top? It will over heat very quick....

Is there a dealer in Armidale that would sell you a DOA FH 601 engine for scrap that has a good top end ? The FH 601 comes from the same family as the Fh 641, 661 and 680. The fan and shroud should be the same, maybe......

With summer coming on down there, with out the fan to move the air, it's not going to last long, might be worth a call.

Can you strap a backpack blower on to the mower and point it in there as a stopgap?

Thanks all. From the sound of it, merely being exposed to the natural airflow won't be enough. That's not surprising but I thought it may be worth checking. I have a gut feeling that I won't be able to find a new fan (the old one is in pieces) but I will see if I can rig our 12 volt camping fan on top of a taped-up shroud as a hack. The RPM won't be as high but it could help me run over the grass until I get time to try to remove the dead bolts or tap new ones in.

Thanks all.
