Alternative to Scotts fertilizer

Homeowner here, looking for advice on spring weed control and fertilizer.

I have used Scotts and Bayer products in the past and been satisfied for the most part. Problem now is that they have officially lost their mind with the pricing.

I used to be able to treat 15K sq. ft. for around $37.00, last 3 years that has creeped up and up, now I am seeing bags over $50.00. :dizzy:

Enough is enough.

I have a 40 gallon sprayer I would like to use (also have a 150LB tow behind broadcast).

Set me up, what do I need, where can I get it. There is a pretty well stocked lawn and garden place in Newark, DE (not far from me) that I get my tree chemicals from. Assuming they would have it.

Grass seems to be a mix, not sure exactly what it is, not Bermuda or anything exotic.

Help a brother out.

Yup, the fert prices are through the roof, but it's across the board. First off, while Scotts makes a fine, excellent, even fertilizer, there is far too much N in their combo products like Step 1. Scotts is by far and away the best retail consumer fert, but again, just too much N.

You might want to look for a legal certified LOCAL biz that does apps. The Lebanon and Anderson products are good, but are usually only sold to the profession distributor outlets. A local guy might be able to apply for you more cheaply than you can do it yourself at this point.

Pennington just bought a retail fert company, and they are about 20% cheaper than Scotts at Lowes. That product I saw today also uses Barricade instead of pendimethalin. Much longer crabgrass prevention, but may lower germination rates if you want to seed n the fall.

Try locating a local company... that is what most of us are here in this forum. I could do you property for just a bit above what it would cost if you applied Scotts yourself. (Being in NY, obviously, I am not saying I COULD apply on your property)

Great advice,...and I can certainly appreciate that. The cost factor anymore is close to the same. the difference,...you get great results from a company that does it all the time, and knows what to use when. :)

I would like to add though, that you may have luck at a place like a TSC store and get a jug of Trimec. the fert.,....try co-ops and other places that will sell an off brand fert.. That way, you can run a straight fert. rather than a combo product. I know you've been on here before - and have asked about other aspects of your property, because I remember you. OI think it had to do with a bunch of trees or something, if I remember right. But the right track is, to stay AWAY from the shiny, pretty bags (scotts). Anyway, I hope this helps.:)

$37.00 for 15k lol. I would only treat up to 4 to 5k for that.
Hence the reason I do it myself.

Point is, I can get my lawn looking pretty nice without spending a fortune. I have proven this with two of our last homes. Our last home had 4 acres of straight grass.

Thanks for the tips so far. I think I'll take a look at TSC first.

Correct, I have gotten my Leland Cypress treatments down to a science thanks to this site. I have over 50, plus 15 or so white pines, so needless to say, the bagwoms USED to love this place.

I have also had great success here with a few Exmark/motor gurus, there is a sweet knowledge base here for sure.

Best bet is to find who sells it commercially in your area. Most places around here you can buy a 50 lb bag for around $20. Then invest in some trimec, momentum or three way. It will last you a long time because a little will go a long way. And with most products you will and should only spray twice a year. Read the label. The label is the law.

If that was a reference to my post... I would not treat 15k for $37 either. $40 is what I charge for my 3 to 5k properties. I said I could treat his property for a bit over what it would cost him... he would pay $52 for a 15k bag of Scotts plus tax. I would do 15k for $65 to 75, depending.
