Has anyone been using "NEXTDOOR" to get business? Seems great for the weekenders to get some lawns but "business's" have to register their business and are restricted as to how they advertise.

Been getting a lot of kickback from some folks in my realm of Nextdoor for trying to make the weekenders have to do it the same or quit advertising.

I’m on it, but my area Nextdoor is useless. If it wasn’t free, I’d be gone in a heartbeat. Most people on my area one just go to ***** and moan about the most useless crap like a raccoon seen during the day or a service dog licking itself in a bank (I wish I was making this up). I think I’ve gotten two calls ever and both were tire kickers.

Been good for a few referrals. Some places fight the advertising a little more than others. If you wan keep the posts to a minimum it helps your chances of not having issues.

Mine seems to be overrun with lost dog ads. Every other post it seems has either a lost dog, or a pic someone took of a dog asking "Is it yours?"

When a 'NEW" landscape guy comes to Nextdoor and advertises he gets hammered by the "LEADS" telling him to go post in the Business Thread and they sometimes let the "handyman" or the "I'm just trying to make a little extra money" guy have his say. When I tell them about the rules other "White Knights" have to jump in and say "but he's not a business".

I'm sorry, but if you are responding to an ad you can talk about anything, but if you are throwing it out to everybody before a need is asked for then you are ADVERTISING.

Are you saying if someone is "looking" for a lawn guys you can throw your name into the hat or refer yourself?

Awhile back my wife used to refer me on a social/referral site, not sure which one. She didn't lie, just listed my name and contact info when someone was looking for a contractor. Curious if you guys think this is unethical but it worked?

Someone would post.. Looking for someone to remodel my bath. Wife.... Try Mike 000-000-0000

I use this....but it's more the neighborhood gossip site. Occasionally we'll throw a few ad's up but it's not at the top of our priority list.

Haven't got anything from it yet and don't really plan to. It's more for exposure.

I've had good success on it, but it tends to be an issue. I had my last post taken down because it was "advertising" but before that happened I had multiple people ask me to do work, and then another guy jumped into my feed stating he did work also and would be happy to give them an estimate. No brotherhood, just a ruthless game we play with each other.

So i know this is an older thread, but i feel I gotta say something.

I can see Nextdoor being very good, even w/o advertising. You NEED a business profile. Also set up a personal one. In your area, if someone is looking for a service you offer, recommend yourself, however be clear it is your business. that is 100% acceptable.

On your business page, if you are lucky enough and someone recommends you, thank them on nextdoor. (it will send you a email saying xxxxxx recommended you, and you can respond to that).

I feel all it takes is a handful of customer to use and recommend you on it. Then when you do get a client because of your current customers recommendation, give them a referral gift. (for us, when someone refers someone and they sign up, we'll give them $40.)

Best part, is all this is free to use.

I used to use Nextdoor as a way to advertise, but then I noticed all the posts were from constant complainers always complaining about something in the neighborhood. Not really the type I want to do business with...and I never actually got a customer off NextDoor for the 5+ years I posted on it. Needless to say, I gave up and would rather post to local facebook groups where people are more "lively". NextDoor is dead.

There’s a handyman guy around here that keeps getting caught making accounts with fake names to recommend himself as a business. He had to change his name of his company because he did a bad job on this guy’s house and the guy blasted him on there

I'm on there without my business name. Mostly crusty old busy body types who want cheap work. So I just troll and make smart ass comments when prompted.. Not worth your time as a business. As a rule of thumb I also do not use yelp or anything like that because there are so many a$$holes out there that will try to bring you down with bogus reviews. Even your competition sometimes.

True Story:

About 6 years ago I was asked by a pastor to give him a quote to mow his lawn. It was about an acre and a half. I gave my price, my terms, and how to pay, which were all very reasonable and relatively the same as every other company in my area. Nothing out of the ordinary.

He got mad about the price, and said he would offer me half the quoted price, but pay cash. I politely refused and said I couldn't, then really got mad!

He started threatening me and saying if I didn't take his offer, he was going to write a bunch of google and yelp reviews about how bad my business is and be sure to warn others about how terrible I am. I just said "go ahead, while your doing that I'll be contacting my lawyer." Then got in the truck and left.

Some people are NUTS.

Wow, hardly the behavior one would think from a pastor, but anymore I'm just not surprised! Yours is the same reply I've given before!!
