Hey guys, what's your favorite string trimmer? I'm thinking of buying my first brand new one. Last year I ran with a lightly used Echo SRM225. It was constantly having problems. This year I bought 2 used SRM230s. I siezed one of them last week weed eating an ally. Last year I left the guard on my srm225, but the guards were off of the 230s when I got them, so I was running maybe 8 inches of string per side, running WOT for about 15 minutes, when it started smelling hot and sounding funny. I took my finger off the trigger to try to figure out what was going on, and it immediately stalled. I tried restarting it, and almost yanked my shoulder out of the socket. Jk. Anyway, I've been stressing that my other 230 will go down since my 225 doesn't want to stay running atm. From my research, I'm very interested in the Echo 2620T. I like running longer trimmer line, but don't know if the t model will make it a dog for turning upside down to edge. I do quite a bit of edging each week, so upside down performance is important. Any thoughts or recommendations? I'm really pretty open to other ideas. I'm getting busy enough that it's time to pay for reliability since I can't afford the time of an unnecessary break down. Looking forward to hearing from y'all!

My favorite trimmer hands down is the Maruyama B30L. It also comes in a turbo version with a 1.9:1 gear reduction. They've been redesigned with a new throttle grip and off off switch and the newest model number is B300L.

I've had the Husky 525 LST and LS but I don't think they're available anymore, only the Mark 2 version. I've also had the Stihl FS 94R and FS 111RX and the only Stihl I can recommend out of these two is the 94. I just flat out don't like 4-Mix.

I had the 2620 and 2620T but they had way too much vibration and I absolutely despise the throttle grip.

I have never heard of this brand before? I checked their site and the trimmers look good, actually impressive. There doesn't seem to be a dealer anywhere close to me. I did notice their throttle grip design as well. Looks like decent ergonomics. They manufacture their own engine as well. I honestly noticed more vibration in my old Ech SRM-230U than with either of my 2620's. Regardless some is still present. What is Maruyama's design differences to reduce vibration?

I run the Echo 2620T and I love it, never had single issue. Cranks on 3rd pull cold. After that it cranks on 1st pull every time. I've been running Black Diamond .095 and love it.

Have you ever considered a Darwin’s Grip. It the best thing you can do to make using a string trimmer easier. Eliminates back pain from standing in hunched over position. I would never use a trimmer again without a DG.

Ditto on the 2620T. Workhorse and easy starter even in the heat.

I was curious about the 2620T but ended up buying 2620's with handlebars, the D ring, and a PAS with curved edger. Plus a PB-2620. All the same engine, mostly the same parts, so the maintenance is a bit easier. The power/torque of the this engine is great. Cant say that I have needed the increase torque of the 2620T They do run a bit "thirsty" on gas though. More so than my old SRM-230U.

Make sure you install your DG correctly and keep tweaking until you get it dialed in for your height..Arms should be practically straight when standing straight up. Used my 2620T today with DG, runs flawlessly.

I'm getting flak for frequently speaking positive about the DG. After you use it please share your impressions, positive or negative.

KM130/131's are the only way to go for me, for trimming and everything else

And no guard of course (I use an edger attachment and almost never edge with the line attachment)

I just spoke to the owner of DG and he sent me the following information about the Pro series. He said he would have a video later explaining how the Pro model is different than the original.

The pro series comes with a brace that doubles as a pre-cut line holder, hi-vis yellow, stronger vise with a quick release lever. It also will lay down flat against the trimmer for storage. It will ship with a blister pack to hang on the wall as well. The video explaining the upgrades and will be out soon.

Lol. It seems like a cool idea... for a problem that I never noticed. I'll have to pay attention this next week to see if I am hunched while trimming. I'd try one if it was half the price, but almost $70! I agonize over a $30 purchase... maybe more of a problem for taller guys with shorter trimmers. I had to hunch over with a curved shaft husky a couple years ago, maybe a back saver for that.
Would you guys recommend T models or not? At this point I'm leaning towards an Echo 2620 flavor.

I had a Tanaka 25cc built I believe but Deere branded strait edger from '08 till this spring. Good unit over all. Power was great, so was the starting. Unfortunately it always had a bit of a vibration I could never remedy. The D ring loop was coated with crappy foam that eventually dry rotted and slowly fell off.

I have used Shindaiwa for years…. Like the T282 made in Japan . Don’t care for the newer shindaiwa or Red Max. Don’t make them like they used to. I just bought a Maruyama 300 trimmer and adding a 300 turbo along with a new backpack blower. Made in Japan and 5 year warranty.

On the subject of best string trimmer, i've been less than thrilled with my new Stihl FS94. It's needed carb adjustments since day 1, and has no high speed carb jet to allow for adjustment. As a consequence, it runs poorly by comparison to other 2-cycles. Absolutely no part throttle performance. It's either WOT, or wants to bog down & nearly die. It is light though. And I do appreciate the "always on" ignition. That said, I wish I'd have bought something else.

If I switch brands, I think I might roll the dice on the Maruyama. I can't remember reading anything but praise for them, which is really saying something these days...

(Edit: Later posts have proven that I'm incorrect about the lack of high-speed jet.)

I bought my first Shindaiwa trimmer 30 years ago and have never owned anything else but I've been thinking about buying a Maruyama trimmer to try something different. I've had the their BL9000 blower for 6? years and it's been solid.
