Best fertilizer for thick St. Augustine?

I know fert alone does not make a lawn thick, it also has to do with proper cutting. water, etc.... I have always used Lesco 24-2-11 slow release. But was told recently by another LCO to use 10-10-10 fast release to get thicker grass. What the deal? I cut once a week in summer through Nov.
Also I know most poeple up north top dress lawns, can you do this on st. augustine and what are the effects of doing this?

i live up north (pa) and dont know anyone outside of golf courses that top dress............better get some local professional advice before listening to this other guy

You should consider adding more micro suppliments besides just the granular.

A thick healthy st. aug. lawn requires: proper mowing, watering, soil pH, soil composition, sunlight and a good pest control and slow release N program.
