Hello all, I am having a hard time finding out if you are allowed to have your business name on your own vehicle in Michigan.. Is there a legal route that I have to take? I keep being told not to even put anything at all on my vehicle, so I'd also like to know why most don't do it?

Contact your state department of professional regulation for their opinion.
Other reasons not to letter work trucks would include higher insurance premiums for your commercial vehicle and reducing the chance of getting ripped off since advertising attracts bad and good people.

Funny this comes up. We've had our business name and number on our trucks for 22 yrs and have never had anything negative happen until today.
The WI state MV Dept stopped one of our Duallys with a 24' trailer. Seems that last yr a new regulation was added, any truck/trailer that is over 10k lbs must display a DOT registration number and comply to the same lighting/tire/brake and safety equipment as say an 18 wheeler meaning trailer must have corner and side lights, plus 3 center lights if over 80" wide, must be on at all times while moving. Fire extinguisher and triangles in cab with marked location label. Drivers log if operated for more than 9 hrs day and more plus you must have an annual inspection at an authorized service facility.
Now I don't know about Michigan but I would get ahold of the state division on motor vehicles plus an motor vehicle inspector before if you don't want more headaches like we had today

They just changed the rules here last year so that now the weight limit is 26K before you need DOT numbers. Prior to that you needed them to avoid be stopped by the MDOT, so most guys had their name on their truck right along with the numbers. Now that most don't need numbers, many don't bother lettering their trucks either.

As far as insurance here, you get asked whether or not your vehicle is being used for work by any insurance co regardless, and if you tell them no, then get into one and they clearly see you are, you will not be covered. Having your name on the side or not makes no difference.

I don't have any name on my truck and I get the stink eye from a lot of other LCO's like I am just another laid off factory worker cutting into their business. I've been doing this longer than most of them though, so I don't let it bother me.
