I'll give it to CAT finance, they may have made some bad loans, but they've been smart enough to get all the equipment back and stabilize the used price of the equipment versus just dumping it all on the market or auctioning it off. About 1/3 of the equipment in the pics is actually priced, they'll price any machine for you if you are serious about buying it, but they've prevented the situation of having say 20 backhoes all at the same price but different shape/hrs and ending up with a handful of the "junk" ones because someone has picked the best of the litter.

I have seen full sweeps on rear engine track loaders a handful of times. One setup like the first pic and 2-3 like the second. One of the second style was a demo machine and had vertical slats across the front window like excavator demo guarding. On the first style the bottom of the sweeps went inside the loader arms and mounted to the front of the frame. That set of sweeps was on 963 that had a rear mounted winch with an arch. It was used by some logger out of missouri select cutting hardwoods. Never got a chance to talk to anyone involved, but it pulled a PILE of logs out and stacked them. I've never seen rear sweeps that weren't angled like i drew in. The reason for rear sweeps is keeping unexpected visitors from coming through the rear window and to keep the stack from getting bent up. I guess most people figure the can use the bucket to protect the cab your just go crashing through the brush backwards, b/c i've easily seen twice as many track loaders with rear sweeps only as full sweeps. There was a 605 with rear sweeps and winch on machinery trader in MO for quite sometime.

Chris, you sure made that 345 look smooth when you were grading out your little sandbox.
That was exactly what I meant.

I am not sure that is as true with all CAT equipment. Especially the 312 sized excavators on down, Backhoes down to skid steers they have dumped a lot machines on the market via Iron Planet. CAT is part of Iron Planet and they have used that venue to dump a lot machines. This has killed CATs resale value on any machine that can be transported rather cheaply. This is my observation.

There is one in Pasco, Wa. as well which covers the Pac West. Amazing how much iron is still in limbo. That is a crazy amount of equipment. What I find amazing is with all the guys going out of business here, still very difficult to win a decent job. Still more contractors than there is work to be done. I think it will be very scary when the two actually balance out.
What's the scary part?

I had a discussion with a excavation contractor 3 years ago from now he is retired now. He said Caterpillar would have troubles selling equipment to contractors that couldn't afford the payments, the only reason why people buy Cat is they have better financing.

I wouldn't buy a over priced Cat excavator your buying some very expensive yellow paint.

Some of that stuff looks brand new still. Dirtman, how did you get to operate the 345? do you just have a cat key and fired it up?

Well I had my cat key and I asked some random guy that worked there is it was ok to try a machine out. he said sure but go up front and get a salesman. Of course I didn't go get a salesman I started digging!
