I don't spray commercially. I do however hate ants and battle them @ home.

In my area we battle fire ants. Blanket spray the yard. Highly effective, lasts for months. Needs to be watered in though or applied in VERY high water volume

 

And, what product/material are you applying??

 

I've applied Talstar for rose chafers and found the ants disappeared as well

Blanket spraying max label rates of Bifen will control fire ants for 2 to 3 months sometimes longer depending on other factors. After blanket spraying even the ants deep in the ground will have no where to go and will eventually come in contact with Bifen and die. Bifen is not as effective for some of the other types of ants like Pyramid ants.

 

I'm in the Midwest/Great Lakes region, so I don't believe we're dealing with Fire Ants this far to the North.

Most likely the source of the sand mounds in turfgrass lawns is Field Ants.

 

this is a common issue and I get asked the same question, thus far when people ask me about getting rid of ants my reply has been, move.

Blanket spraying will reduce the ant colony numbers by a lot but will not eliminate them. Wait a couple weeks for the ants to start recovering then drop a few drops of Advion Ant Gel near their hills. It’ll be game over shortly thereafter.

 

I blanket spray Bifenthrin, no more fire ants for 2-3 months.

Usually I hit it once when temps reach the 70s and they start moving, so like April. I usually get control til Aug 1 and hit it again. By the time that wears off, its cool again, so no ant hills.

Doesn't control all ants.

 

Extinguish Plus. Here in south Florida, it takes 4 apps the 1st year, 3 apps the 2nd, then 2 annually. It is an extremely low use rate (1.5#/acre), and it provides phenomenal results, as it has an adulticide and an insect growth regulator. It is even approved for use in horse pastures.

 

I'll have to dig out some notes from a seminar about 2 years ago. I don't ever so far run into fire ants here. But 1 hour north east of us they do all the time. So it is just a matter of time. But they were talking about a product, not bifen, that did wonders on fire ant mounds. I'll have to dig through some stuff. I'll see if I can find it.

How long of results are you guys seeing with Bifen XTS?

 

I typically apply in March April and don't start seeing them (fire ants) until late August. But it varies from site to site. With a lot of rain I imagine it might not last as long.

 

Hard to argue with results like that.

We apply along with our spring pre and fall pre. Never see any ant hills in the lawns.

I do the same and have ZERO ant issues. But I do rotate doing this every other year.

 

Anyone using the granular Fipronil? Does it really give year round control? Or is the bifen the way to go? Figured it would be best to know before I go around offering to customers…..

 

TopChoice is excellent, and does give 12 months of control, at 87#/acre. Make sure the application area is within the quarantine zone for fireants.

FIRST RULE OF PEST CONTROL, IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM There are a million varies of ants and not all are affected by insecticides. Pyramid Ants will still be here when it glows in the dark.
