Not sure if i am posting this in the right spot. I bought a used Toro Z4200 and the owner said he used Mobil 1 Synthetic. Does anyone else use Mobil 1? Would it run better using a better oil? Is there something out there that is better? Thanks!

I run it in everything. Think about it-your mower only takes 1-2qts. Why not spend the extra few $$ for a synthetic?
I do it for peace of mind. Your mower is air cooled and runs pretty hot. The synthetic will stand up to the hotter temperatures over time and won't break down as fast.
JMO!

Run it in my truck and mowers. If you look at a lot of past threads on this subject, there are a lot of guys running synthetic, Mobil 1 and other kinds. Pretty cheap insurance!

Actually, the true reason behind synthetic oils in lawn mowers is due to superior
protection during prolonged periods of oil starvation.

Between that, and mowing a lawn is considered extreme duty for an engine.

Lawn mower engines don't usually have an oil pump, the oil basically sits at the bottom of the crankcase
and the crankshaft and the bottom of the piston rod "splash" the oil up and around the inside of the engine.
Not necessarily the best way to do things, but not necessarily the worst either.

That is...
Until the lawn mower gets on an incline.
And all the oil moves to one side with the force of gravity.

Now when mowing a lawn one would likely spend more than a few seconds on an incline.
Synthetic oil provides a better level of protection for these periods of prolonged oil starvation.
Yes, one or two minutes is prolonged, especially at 3,000 rpm's.
Some of us spend 5, 10 and 20 minutes on an incline, some of these inclines are steep.

In conclusion, it is insurance against engine seizure.

I have around 3400 hours on my old 23 kawasaki and have used a wide variety of non synthetic oils from the start.

I have used Mobil 1 for decades in every type of engine. Never a failure or premature wear issue. Walmart has the best price these days on the big jugs. Dealers always want you to buy their rebranded crap. Its not a warranty issue either. Oils are graded by third party labs. As long as it meets manufacturer specs you are in the clear for warranty issues.
