Engine replacement?

I have 2 Troy Bilt 21 inch push mowers that I'm thinking of replacing the engines on. They came with 140cc Briggs. Question is this... Would you go with 163cc Briggs or Predator Brand 173cc? The 140 Briggs is not very reliable after a season of 25 or so weekly mowings. I have 2 Troy Bilt push mowers that are 4 years old and still going strong one Troy Bilt brand engine and other 163cc Briggs. I know... I know it's not commercial but I have NO choice financially right now. Thanks

Do either come with any kind of warranty? I don't think there is much of difference in power both should be fine most stuff like that is all coming from china even though its 2 different mowers. I guess the Briggs one would be the best since it everything else should be the same.

Remember that residential mowers are used for 50 hours a year give or take of service. it sounds like you are putting 3-4 years of work on them in one season. Maintenance will be the biggest factor in longevity.

For 250 price tag, I would just get a used mower for 100 bucks run it to the ground and buy used again when it dies

The predator has a 2 year. The Briggs I believe is 1 but they are both only residential as you know. If money was no object I'd get a brand new Gravely pro stance but I'm just unable to do that at the moment and there is no medium, it's either super basic and cheap 21" or 1k+ Scag/Exmark. I don't like the Toro, their drive system is tro troublesome ime

Just want to add this for anyone else that reads this post and is in a predicament like I am, the two Troy Bilt push mowers in speaking of in this post only need carburators. It's always the springs and linkage on the ones with auto-choke and/or clogging in the carbs that give trouble. The actual engines never give trouble. Been using Briggs and Stratton since wizard brand stuff with the 5hp briggs from the 70s and only had one Briggs that had a valve issue, and that was on a JD z225 zero I bought new in 2011 but it was under warranty.

If you are really using push mowers and not self-propelled, switch to self-propelled for sure.

Troy Bilt doesn’t make engines, it is probably a Chinese Honda knockoff.

Not cost effective to put new engines on used push mowers. Make sure you are keeping an eye on air filters and change the oil depending on how much you use. You can run a residential self-propelled mower commercially, it simply isn’t ideal.

It's Chinese for sure. Powermore is the brand if I remember correctly. I usually get non self propelled only because it's less crap to fix. I fix all my own stuff. Mower, string trimmer, vehicle, house😬. Just contemplating engine replacement or maybe carburetor because the 140cc isn't up to par ime
