Exmark Commercial 30 Problems

How many of you guys that have the commercial 30 have issues with them? I bought mine last year and have had nothing but absolute problems. I use it every day as my main mower. I installed an hour meter when I bought it so I can keep track of maintenance. I have 305 hours so far and am ready to run this thing off a cliff. First I was having a pretty serious issue with the blades not stopping when you release the handle. Was fixed, then would happen again a few days later. Luckily no fingers were sliced off when I was cleaning out the chute of grass. After bringing the mower in to have that looked at on 4 different occasions, finally it was fixed. Then the pulleys went in it 2 separate times. Now for the 3rd time its going in because when mowing anything higher than an inch, the mower blades sound like they just stop spinning. The grass cut quality looks like crap because of this. when I brought it in last week, they changed the belt and that seemed to have fixed it for a few days. Now back to the same problem. My dealer has been nothing but awesome with this whole situation. They go above and beyond what they need to do. I wrote to exmark about all my issues and they pretty much told me to scratch and keep bringing it back to the dealer and having it fixed. Not only is this a waste of my time, but I'm losing money. When it works its great, I love it, but when it doesn't ( more often than not) its more of an anchor in my trailer. Has anyone else had issues with theirs? IM considering selling this one and buying a new one. Maybe its a lemon. Im being mindful of the manufacturer date that's stamped on it when I go to buy a new one.

I've read nothing but terrible things about the Exmark/Toro 30in mowers.

Really? I know a lot of guys on here that have had 0 problems. The only common problem was the trannies going out on the exmark last year. That has Been fixed. I own the turfmaster and have had 0 problems in about 200 hrs use.

Very informative post :hammerhead: I cant stand the post on lawniste when people say oh i hear bad things must mean there all bad! I have one that this season we have put 150 hours on. The only thing i had problems with was the recall for the spindle. Other then that is has been reliable and cut way down on having to use just 21 in gated back yards.

Mine went to the dealer this week. Something with the gas tank and the charcoal filter.

My Turf Masters had one issue with the belt coming lose. Happened on one occasion, dealer fixed it. No other issues. 300+ hours although it doesn't get used as much now that I'm using the Gravely. Before then, it was an everyday / all day machine.

325 plus hours so far and absolutely love it. Under warranty both idler pulleys replaced-no big deal. You can have my 30" when you pull it from my cold, dead fingers:laugh::laugh::drinkup:

the only problem is that you own oneÂ… and its your main mower.
How is it a problem that its my main mower?

I have only heard about a few core issues that have been fixed by Exmark (tranny, throttle cable, blade washer, etc.) for us it is a great mower with NO problems. Maybe you just got a lemon?
Im thinking mine was a lemon. It has to be. The throttle cable got adjusted, no big deal, and yea, they changed the washer on the spindle. Im thinking about buying another one. Only issue is the new one they have at the dealer has a manufactured date stamp of march 2013. I don't want to buy it being it was made around the same time as my current one is.

We have had problems with ours as well. We have maybe 200 hours on it? it has already gone through a set of belts. If the belts aren't in tip top shape the mower is super slow. The Kawi engine's bolts loosened and oil spilled everywhere (not exmarks fault) the other day.
Would I buy another one? Not unless I really needed it. For the most part we either run 21" or 48" walk behinds, but a 30" still has its place and that's why I purchased it. For example: this morning my guys took the 30", a 21" mower will take too long but its not enough grass to pull a trailer and take the 48". The property is kind of a PITA with parking and all that so a trailer would just complicate things for today.

that's true about the belts. They put a new belt on mine because it would sound like the blades would stop spinning and it did the trick for all of 2 or 3 days. A 48'' wont work on the properties I do, which is why a 30'' is my main mower. Most house lot sizes are 50x100 including the house... so a 30, and a 21 is my best option. especially with gates, but that's besides the point.

I have about 400 hours on mine. I love it. The problems I had which I just put down to normal wear an tear was
Drive cable broke an then they didn't adjust it correctly.
Then the drive belt jumped off

hah, if those were my only problems, I would be a happy camper.

Btw, any idea what all of your guys' Date of Manufacturing are? Mines May 2013. Theres a sticker on the side that says "DOM"

My Turf Masters DOB was 2013. The only issue I've ever had with it was a belt replacement which got replaced under warranty for the same exact thing. The "blades sounded like they quit spinning." Eventually they did quit spinning. Dealer replaced it and haven't had an issue since.

my owners manual is out in the workshop right now so this is from memory. the blade belt(engine to spindle) is recommended to be replace about 125 hours and the timing belt at about 250 hours. I so far have replaced the blade belt three times with getting about 125 to 155 hrs on each belt. At the point that I have adjusted the blade belt three times I junk it because for the $12 or so for the belt it is not worth screwing around. The changeout only take about 20 minutes and is listed as normal maintanance in the owners manual. The third belt that is on right now has had one adjustment so far and has about 35 hours on it. Damn but I love hourmeters. The thicker the grass-the quicker the belt dies and mulching makes a difference also. These machines are not maintance monsters but what maintanance there is is very important.

We bought two of the 2014 Exmark 30's. Both having issues with the fuel flowing through the tube to the carb. We have to loosen the cap to allow air in otherwise the mower stalls. Dealer gave us new gas caps. Didn't solve the problem. I believe it is in the fuel tank where the breather tube comes out, not getting enough air. I would like to replace the original cap with a breather cap but so far haven't found one that fits.

Great. I just ordered a 2014 and hopefully wont have that problem. I had this same issue with my 13hp little wonder Honda. Just changed the gas cap and it was fine.

I wouldn't mind changing out the belts every 100 hours or so, but when its at the dealer every other week, it becomes a problem. I'm hoping the 2014 model doesn't give me nearly as many issues. I only bag too btw.

Think about getting yourself a hour meter. I've found that most maintenance I have to do I pretty much predictable just by looking at the meter

I already have one on there. That's how I knew I had 320 hours on it lol I bought another one that will come in this week. Lets see if this has the same issues. The only problem mine didn't have is the transmission, but over the last few days it sounds like something is grinding. Go figure.

Keep a eye on your idler pulleys. Both of mine went out already. Alot of the grass I cut is very lush and often damp and it just cooked the bearings. When they started to go the mower noise changed to sort of a dry and rough sound. They really need to increase pulley size. Both were changed under warranty.

I'll have them look at that. The mower is back in the shop again. Now it sounds like the engine isn't getting enough of fuel. Mower keeps surging. I cant get one week out of the junk without it having to go to the shop. Im sending exmark another email because this is ridiculous already. This mower has cost me more in time than its worth.
