FH680V 23hp Kawaski, wierd oil leak

860 hours oil leaking all around the side of the engine near oil filter, oil pressure switch, under cowling, and on the frame at the bottom of the engine below the filter. I brought it into the dealer, they cleaned it up, (pressure washer), thought it might be the top seal according to the dealer mechanic. So they changed the engine and hydro oil, ran it for 7 hours, but not under stress cutting grass, and it did not leak and they could not find a leak.

Picked it up and cut some thick grass for two hours putting the engine and hydro under load. After finishing found oil leaking all around the same area including a lot of oil now below the engine on the pto engaging pulley where the belt is. Also found what looks like a little oil leakage around the breather/dipstick cap for the hydro beneath the seat right in front the engine. Brought it back in and waiting for another diagnosis.

I have read about the upper seal leaking or even the lower seal but could it also be maybe the hydro cap leaking once the pressure builds in the system then spraying all over with the engine flinging it after it comes out the cap?

I will include a couple of pics

Why would folks look into crankshaft seals first?
It's one of the most labor intensive to fix...

When we are not sure as to the cause of a problem we start by fixing everything we can think of, starting with the cheapest and easiest.

Some likely places for oil to leak that I would check (and fix / replace) first:

Valve cover gasket.
Dipstick cap or shaft seal.
Governor shaft seal.
Oil filter seal.
Oil drainage plug loose or not sealing.

Those are all the easy ones, then there's...
Cylinder head gasket.

And if it's none of those you might be in trouble, about now I might check into the upper or lower crankshaft seal...
It's just that it's not the first thing I would get into fixing.

Just had my oil drainage plug fixed and ran it longer to find my oil pan seal is bad as well.

Not sure about yours mine was a mess as well FH641V.

I thought crank or trans seal was out as well but it had just slung it everywhere picked up grease made it look metallic.

My old dealer said they all do it don't worry about it lol

Get it fixed to dangerous to be mowing like that mine almost caught fire when seals went out in full.

Its very common for the 2 bolts on the "breather" to loosen up, you have to remove the flywheel to get to them.
That should be removed and cleaned out periodically anyways all kinds of nasty builds up in there.

Actually, Larry, there are three bolts on the breather of that engine. But you are correct the flywheel has to be removed. Best to go ahead and replace the gasket once all of that has been done. This is the most common oil leak on the 23 hp kawi, at least in my experience.

Thats what I said, maybe they are talking about it being frozen because they could not get it off, but I dont know why they would need to take it off to change the upper bearing, the girl was reading the ticket, I will have to talk to the mechanic when I got to pick it up later in the week to find out exactly what they did.

Ok they replaced the upper and lower seal and the reason for saying the frozen crankshaft pulley is because instead of pulling the whole engine off to change the lower seal they dropped the crankshaft pulley to access it which was frozen on the shaft after never being removed for ten years. Cut 3 hours and did not leak so hopefully that's it.
