Does anyone use the Grass Flap on any of their machines or some kind of mulch plate? I see so many guys use these things and decided to get one myself. It’s horrible. I mean it’s nice if you’re in a tight spot and don’t want to blow grass on a fence or car but other than that it seems pretty useless when cutting more than an inch of grass. It just clumps up and makes a mess. Even if you go over it a second time it still clumps. I’m better off just shooting it and double cutting it with the chute open or simply bagging.

It's worth it's weight in gold for controlling clippings. You might also find it very useful when leaves begin to fall but you don't quite yet want to convert to a full mulching kit. Just wavy blades and chute blocker on my 32" snapper.

I have a Grass Flap on my 52" Exmark Staris.

I use it for 2 purposes:
1. flip it down to keep from blowing grass into places I/customer don't want clippings - mainly mulch beds.
2. flip it down and use it along with gator style blades to pulverize leaves in the fall.

If you're trying to use it (or any other chute blocker) in order to mulch grass, that's NOT a chute blocker's purpose.

ok got it. i was under the impression it would mulch the clippings up more but i'll just go back to keeping the chute open when the grass is long or bag it

Yep, if you want to mulch grass clippings, you're going to have to put an actual mulch kit on the mower. A mulch kit deals with baffles underneath the deck and will keep the clippings more evenly dispersed for a longer period of time underneath the deck so the clippings can get chopped multiple times.

Any discharge blocker simple blocks at the discharge side. A discharge blocker works great on piles of leaves since they are so large they stay much more evenly dispersed under the deck plus operator will make multiple passes over the piles of leaves. Much quicker than bagging leaves, granted the property has ample space to blow the pulverized leaves once complete.
