I'm looking at a Gravely pro turn Z and the engine has the Gravely badge on it, which I have never seen before on the engines. The engine is 764cc, and 26.5 hp. Who is the manufacturer of this engine and and does anyone have any opinions of it?

Here is the info on it from Gravely

It is funny though that I called 3 different Gravely stores, regarding the make of this engine, and received 3 different answers from the sales staff. One store said they had no idea, second store said it was built by Subaru, the 3rd store said it was " a Chinese knock off of a Japanese engine"(he was probably the most correct)

I did talk to my Gravely parts/service guy to see if they had air filters/oil filters in stock for this engine, which they did. He did not know(or would not say) the maker of this engine, but did say this engine was easier to order parts for because it is within the Gravely parts list as opposed to other engine brands, for what that's worth. He did say this is the 1st year out for this engine.

I have heard positive reviews about Loncin engines from what I can find, and some reports that Loncin has built engines for BMW motorcycles and Toro/Exmark. The Toro/Xmarks with this brand of engines seem to have no issues from what I have read so far.

Any feedback would be most appreciated.

I would automatically not buy it because of the Chinese engine. I don't care how good it is. We are seeing more and more of this...the equipment manufacturer is selling an engine branded as their own, which is actually a Chinese engine used by several other manufacturers. The Chinese engine may be OK, or it may not be. Either way, the manufacturers are doing this to make more profit. I'd much rather support proven engine makes such as Kawasaki, Kohler, or even Briggs. China is not our friend...we buy it because it's cheap.

Making engines for BMW motorcycles is a stretch. If you only knew how much they covet those motors. Hmmm... so... expensive exmark walkbehinds don’t use Kawasaki’s anymore? ( not saying this is bad).... just interesting... they are still too expensive. Can you still get a diesel laser Z with the kubota engine?

That's not really true. You can still get the higher end Kawasaki engines on an Exmark, and probably some other optional engines. It's just that you'll have to pay more for them now, whereas they used to be standard. The Chinese engines are not standard equipment on all models. Top of the line ExMark zero turns still typically run Kawi FX.

I have seen one on a 48" Liberty. I know they are available on other Scag machines. When I was a boy the entry level Cadillac Calais of the early 1960s had the Cadillac drivetrain, but the nice appointments and power equipment was optional. Then there were the Oldsmobile 88s of 1977 with the Chevy engines...
