Hey folks,

Attempting my first engine replacement on my Walker mower. I got the engine off but need to get this piece off of the crankshaft. Not sure what this piece is called. I've loosened the square bolts but it doesn't seem to change a thing.

Also, any pointers on replacing an engine would be helpful. And any pointers as to where to get the best deal on an engine would be beneficial as well. Thanks folks!

Take out the screws and put some penetrant down the holes.
Get a good gear puller with a long reach and pull the pulley off.
You did not mention the HP of your engine.
If it is a 23hp Kohler, you will have to tap the engine mounting holes on the new engine.
I believe the thread is 1/2-13

As for replacement engines, i use either of these two

Check each groove to make sure there are no set screws. Use the proper sized pulley puller. I would put some heat to it as well. Tighten the puller but not super tight. Rap the bolt on the puller. It should budge. Do not over tighten as you will distort or fracture the pulley. A machine shop can press it off safely for a few bucks too. Slow and steady that pulley probably costs way more than you think.

It's a 20 horse.

Thanks for the advice. I'll go get a puller tomorrow from Steve's Wholesale.

Anyone know where I can find the new model number for my engine? Kohlers website has no model number conversions and this engine is 14 years old. It's a CH20S spec number 64660.

I've bought from them before. Know the length and diameter of the crank before calling them. Once on the phone they will be able to find what you need.

The latest spec for the replacement engine should be CH680-3057 which is 23hp. Double check with your vendor of choice but this is what I have been using as a replacment for the Kohlers on the Walkers that we have.
As for the pulley, it may be worn and not worth replacing.
Put the belt on the pulley. Hold the belt tight. The belt should be slightly higher than the outside edge of the pulley. If it sits lower, the pulley is worn and should be replaced.
The new part number for the pulley is 8237-2 and the cost is approximately $65.00.
By the way, the foil tag that has the spec and serial number on it for the engine do not last long. They tend to get where you cant read them or they come off completely.

Great advice, thanks a million! I did hear that the replacement for this was a 20.5 horse though. Do you think that was a mistake? This mower only has 1000 hours but I will check the pulley like you said. How many hours do you normally get out of your walker engines?

It all depends how well a life it's lead. If it was maintained properly you can get 3k to 4k with little effort. If it's abused and neglected they can fail in less than a 1000 hours. Oil, filters and keeping the fins clean are minimums. Follow the manual and use the hour meter for oil change frequency. I blow off my air filters weekly and change bi monthly.

If there are any doubts, call Walker at 800-279-8537. Give them your serial number of the mower and they can verify everything. I have never heard of a 20.5 Kohler

I'm 99% positive you do not reuse that pulley on a new walker engine. It will now be a bolt on pulley. I just changed my 20 horse out for a 23 in the spring and had to change the pulley.

Impressions Landscaping is correct. The pulley part number is 8237-2 and it is bolted on to the engine adapter. Here is a picture of the adapter and the pulley

Is that only if we're upgrading to a 23 horse? I'm looking at going back with engine CH640-3159
Yes, the upgraded pulley would go on the 23 horse. If this picture is correct, your old pulley would fit the 20 horse with no issue. Remember to check your engine pulley for wear. No sense putting in a new engine with a worn pulley.

I agree with ericg.. going to the work of changing best to check pulley so not re-pulling. On a side note.. take the pulley (once off) to a dealer and check with a 'new' belt. Your old may be worn. If your pretty sure the belt you have is in good shape then check it on engine.. be easier then so if wore leave it on old engine and just replace. I'd get it off if it was mine. PB blaster for day with several applications then pull (with heat if needed).

I'm getting ready to replace the engine on my walker as well. What else is needed to upgrade to the 23 from the 20? Is there a significant price difference between to two?
The pulley needs to be changed. The 20hp comes with a new air ckeaner assembly which you can see in the first link below. The 23 hp comes with a dome that fits over the carb which is utilized on remote air cleaners. In addition, the 20hp has the smaller pancake regulator bolted to the base of the enclosure. The 23hp has a separate regulator that is remotely mounted. The muffler should be the same if I remember correctly.

Here is a link for the CH640-3159 at $1888.00

And here is the same vendor who has the ch680-3057 at $1480.00
