Husqvarna MZ48 Deck Issue

Hey all
I recently bought a Husqvarna MZ48 with the Clear Cut 48" Deck. I am having terrible issues with the deck skipping grass or leaving "trails" of grass at about center of the deck. This is a brand new machine for this year. I took it to the dealer today that I bought it from and they couldn't find anything wrong but did say that this was the only MZ48 they've sold and worked on. They sharpened the blades and sent me on my way. The blades were in great shape when I took it to them (only has 3 hours on unit). Any help with what to do? Common problems with the Clear cut Deck? Thanks.

Btw I am mowing at 3"-3.25"

I'd first check to see if the belt is routed wrong or perhaps a blade is flipped. If that checks out, I'd make sure both spindles appear to be spinning at the same speed, if you can tell visually from the seat, although you'd probably burn the belt in two pretty quickly if the spindle were binding up. If the deck engagement clutch is slipping, perhaps someone else can chime in on that.

I'm not sure what the current deck pitch is set at. The dealer was supposed to check that yesterday but I'm not certain they did. They checked the RPMs of the deck and said it was running at 3,450.
Any updates here? Even with pitch off it shouldn't cut like that. That middle blade is hardly cutting. Something is severely out of whack..

I was very intrigued by this thread. Must have been an upside down blade. Maybe OP was to embarrassed to come back and tell us.

Sorry it's been a little since I posted any response. The mower is currently back at the dealer. To start things off the mower was no better after the new blades were sharpened. The dealer claimed they checked everything and all checked out good (deck pitch, blade speed, etc). I called Husqvarna and they started a tech case. They advised me to take the mower back to the dealer. I mowed with it the evening before I took it and it did the exact same thing. I had my girlfriend take a video of me mowing and the grass it was leaving uncut. It is clearly leaving the uncut grass center left on the deck. Emailed the video to the dealer showing him what it was doing. I took it to him the next day. I didn't hear from him so I finally called him and he told me I was mowing too fast, which from the video I showed to him proves otherwise. So I then called Husqvarna and they sent me to the escalations department. I then found out that the dealer had blamed the issue on me for mowing too fast and left it at that. I shared the video that I had taken with the escalation guy I was talking to. When he watched the video he laughed and told me I clearly wasn't mowing too fast. He then sent the video to the Husqvarna corporate technicians. In the meantime, the dealer called me and told me the mower was fixed and to slow down and it would cut perfect. After he told me that I called Husqvarna back and told them I was not picking up the mower until it was fixed. I called Husqvarna back the next day and was told that the dealer found the belt not fully seated in the center spindle pulley which in turn was slipping under any load leading to uncut grass. Makes sense..so now the dealer claims they have the mower cutting correctly but with one more issue..they have the belt adjusted to the max and are out of adjustments on the eye bolt. Keep in mind the mower still only has 4 hours on it. The dealer said they emailed Husqvarna to ask them what to do about the adjustment or any future adjustments done to the belt whether it be to redesign a spring or other component. So I am still without the mower until my dealer gets a response on this issue.

If it was constantly slipping it could be stretched and I know for a fact Husqvarna will warranty a belt with a slipping or pulley failure unless they tell the dealer they need to eat it due to improper set up. Either way I hope they have you up and going soon. Some of those issues can be missed by the best but it still is frustrating.

Well I'm glad to see you're getting somewhere with Husqvarna. Sounds like that dealer/service technician needs to be tuned up though. This is the kind of stuff that drives me crazy about a dealer. I'm like service and warranty your product or get out of the business and let someone else have the rights to sell and service that brand!

Thanks guys. Yes it is very frustrating to say the least. I hope things work out because this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for that dealer and for Husqvarna. I had one person from Husqvarna escalation department initially tell me that the mower is probably just not "designed for that kind of hardcore cutting". I have talked to 4 different people from the escalations department and they have been somewhat helpful but not very knowledgeable. I have talked to the Husqvarna corporate technicians twice now and the guys have been very helpful and informative. I will post back when I know more.

Just wondered, do you have the stamped or fabricated deck on your mower? And another question tell us a little a bit about this dealer. I would assume it's not a big box store if it's a MZ but is it like a Hardware store or some kind of Ag Co-op that sells mowers? Whoever it is it sounds like they've never cut a blade of grass suggesting you were being too fast or "hard core" with your mower.

I have the fabricated deck. The dealer is small but strictly Husqvarna. They don't sell any other brands that I've seen. They have approximately 4-5 technicians and one parts/counter guy. The person that said I may be cutting too "hardcore" was actually from Husqvarnas escalation department..not my dealer. My dealer accused me of mowing too fast.

UPDATE:
I picked up my mower last Thursday and mowed on Friday. It is still missing grass!! They did not fix anything!! . Also, now the deck belt squeals every time I engage the deck. The dealer put almost 1.5 hours on the mower while it was in the shop this past time and told me everything was fixed. Here are my pictures from Friday.

Sorry for the delayed response. There is another dealer nearby but his shop is worse than what I'm dealing with now. I have Husqvarna putting in a request to the corporate office for a refund on the mower. Should know something in a couple of days they said. I'm not sure what to go with if I get refunded. May be a topic for a whole new post.

Third set of blades after 50 hours of use and the strips are still apparent with the brand new blades. It has to be an engineering problem. 3 blades side by side with the middle blade slightly forward and an obviously necessary gap due to blade placement on both sides of the middle one. That space only gets wider with blade wear and quickly with the seller recommended blades. Looking at it makes you wonder how it couldn't leave 2 strips at least after a little blade wear.
Like I said, just guessing. I think it sucks that a $4500 mower misses grass period. Small strip, 1 or 2, strips, new blades ,older blades. Its ridiculous.

I have the same issue with my mower as well. I took it back to the dealer and they said there was warranty for a putting a splitter on the front of the deck. They said the problem is there isn't enough vacuum to pull the grass up when it cuts so the bolt on splitter underneath the front of the deck was supposed to fix the problem. Well I've had my mower back for two cuts and it still strips and now I have a piece of flat steel that collects grass and stalls the mower when it decides to clean itself out.

First off, I never mowed when the grass was wet. Secondly, what does it say for the design of a machine that you have to “remove the grass buildup” in order for it not to skip grass? I switched to a Scag after Husqvarna agreed to buy back my MZ48, and I have MINIMAL buildup. I cleaned the deck once last year and it didn’t really need it then, I was just servicing the rest of the mower. I don’t mow wet grass though. Good luck.
