Is it possible to make a mower more quiet?

Been hearing from other members and I myself about neighbors and or House wives complaining about loud mowers. Is there some sort of silencer or way to extend the pipe or even make an exhaust tip that is baffled?

If we can make guns quiet and make exhaust tips that are mellow sounding why can't we make mowers more quiet?

If the customer wants to buy me a new mower that runs quieter or wants to buy me any add ons to help make it quieter, then sure I'd do it. But I am not going to spend money on stupid crap like this.

How many people are truely bothered by our equipment...to the point that they confront us about it? Maybe 1-2%????

I'm annoyed by the "home boy" who drives by our house on occasion with his loud exhaust on his civic. I'm annoyed by the drivers who pull out it front of me on the road. I'm annoyed by my ethics professor who says "right" at the end of every sentence. I'm annoyed with the people who walk their dogs then don't pick up after them when they take a squat in my lawn.

People need to realize that they can't have every they want. It isn't just them in this world.

Life's tough, get a helmet!!!

One of the reasons that the motor is loud on commercial mowers is that the mufflers are generally cheap to begin with and they break down internally over time due to the harsh conditions and vibrations.

My other theory is also that most manufactures want the most power out of the engine, so a low restricted, louder muffler will increase power if it can breath better.

Putting on a baffle or silencer isn't a bad idea, but you might get some power loss.

My 23 Kawi sounds like a Harley...if not for that I would have quit this gig long ago, lol.
You gotta hear a 27HP Kohler when it idles. Neighbor heard my mower and thought I bought a Harley. Sounds like it has a high lope cam.

My mowers are loud also. The fix- AO's. Turn the volume knob all the way up and you can just bearly hear the mower. hahaha

I like loud mowers, its like the siren on my fire engine. They know you are working.
Seriously though I am sure there is something that can be done to all small engines to quiet the exhaust a little more. How about backpack blowers or trimmers too? I know there will always be inherent noise from blades and hydros but the exhaust can use some improvment.

I would think the big trade-off on handhelds, and perhaps even on backpacks, would be increased weight, and bulk.

Just throwing that back out there.

The "power wars" of recent years probably diverted engineering resources into maxing that out vs noise control. They want the pipes as unrestricted as possible to get that last bit of power rating.
Sometimes a straight pipe will cost you power. Unless you dyno one you dont know. We put a R6 Yamaha on a wheel dyno and tried different pipes, the one that made 8hp more had more baffles and was longer and quieter than the rest.
