John Deere mulch on demand, does it work?

Hey all, I am going to buy a ZTR mower sometime in the near future. They're all great but I have a question about the John Deere deck. Does anyone own a JD with the mulch on demand deck? Does it work? Do you like it? Is it worth the extra money? Most of my lawns up here :)canadaflag:) require bagging but I think I can get away with mulching when it's a bit dryer. Any thoughts??

Cheers

I posted this question a week or two ago because I was interested in the mulch on demand deck also. I was told that it did not disperse the grass clippings as well as the regular deck and I should look at the prochute. After looking at the prochute this will be the route I will be going.

There are a couple users of the MOD deck here on LS. They're probably not on here during the Winter months, thats all.

I have horrible personal experience with mulching decks across several brands. I would expect the MOD deck to offer the same results. Except that you "can" side discharge with the flip of a lever. It has been said that the MOD doesn't side discharge as well as a standard 7-Iron.

However, if you have GOOD experience with mulching decks in general (that is, they fit your business and work well for you), the MOD deck should be a good addition.

However if the main reason your buying is to prevent clipping discharge from hitting/landing somewhere, there are several better choices IMO.

I've also got an '06 SuperZ 28EFI, and I mulch with it. But having used a 7-Iron to both mulch and discharge, I love that deck. In fact, if I could put one on a SuperZ I'd consider I had the perfect 60!

But there are several things which I fear make the MOD deck significantly different from the regular 7-Iron, and I want to hear from an operator of one before I buy one. I like Deere quality, but their engine options are a big negative for me: they don't offer the 28EFI is the major one, the other is they keep messing with the hydraulics.

But I prolly won't be satisfied until I own a 7-Iron, and I am intrigued by the MOD. I really want to get feedback from a user who cuts St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia though before I take the plunge.

This is my point. Whether John Deere, Toro, etc etc. You can only design a mowing deck in so many ways. In 20 years, Ive have never used a mulching deck that was able to handle long grass. Its either short grass or extremely dry grass that benefits from mulching.

I hear you on that! Though I don't think the 7 Iron would be considered as strong as Hustler's XR-7. Thing is, it wouldn't take much to make the XR-7 perform close to the 7-Iron. Move a few baffles and bam, you have it.

I have a 757 with MOD. It cuts short and long grass great and leaves an unbelievable cut. In wet grass when discharging it does clump but discharges well in dry grass. The only problem I have had is in the physical handle that opens and closes the mulch kit, it sheared off the pin that was holding it. My dealer ordered a completely new part instead of fixing the one on it and it has been great for almost 400 hours. I bought it in July of 07.

Prior to this Deere I had a 777 with regular deck with mulch kit. I really believe that the MOD deck does as good of a job and then you have the discharge if needed.

I would recommend to anyone or everyone.

You got that right. I was hoping Hustler would wake up this winter and move the baffles forward like the 7IRONII. From all the post on this site as well as another site the 7IRONII deck is the most all around best cutting deck out there. And I don't recall any bad feedback from a single owner about there deck and most rate the machines very high.

Having the baffles up against the blades is causing lift problems and discharge dispersion or clumping problems. Put an open designed deck on the Hustler and they would have to build new plants to keep up with the demand for their mowers.
