Mower has a Kawasaki FS481V-AS13S (Electric Start.) I finished up with a lawn, went on to the neighbors lawn. Shut it off, and all of a sudden it won't start. For the past day or two it seems like it's been taking longer to start. This mower only has 220 hours on it.

When I turn the key it would make two noises, one a clicking noise, and from time to time it would make like a fainted whining noise. Now it's making no noises at all.

- Battery- Test as good, 80% charge.

- Tried to jump the solenoid using a screw driver on the two solenoid post. It sparks, but doesn't turn the fly-wheel or starter.

- I put a voltage meter on the solenoid and ground and the starter started smoking a little bit.

Any ideas on where to start? Starter is $150-$200.00. Solenoid will cost me about $5.00. So if No-one has any ides the solenoid will be my first start. But I don't Understand why it's not cranking or moving the fly-wheel when jumping it at the solenoid.

Well, that's unfortunate the starter smoked "a little bit."

Don't know how much you know about electric motors, it might just need new brushes but usually if they smoke it could be the commutator as well...

On the other hand what have you got to lose?

The first thing I would do is replace the solenoid with a brand new one, just to be SURE that is NOT the problem.

Then...
****** CAREFUL! *********
If it were my mower I'd pull the starter, clamp it in a vise, then hook jumper cables straight up to its terminals and see what gives.
Can't do much else until we know if that starter's any good, only one way to find out, right?

But go replace that solenoid first, it just might be that.
