Somebody tell me about theis engine please. Is it commercial quality? I am sure it is not quite as good and the Kohler Command Pro but will it give me 1500 hours and is it powerful enough?
I am looking at a 60"BadBoy from tractor supply...27 hp kohler courage, 7 guage steel deck and they are selling it for $4999 Dual integrateed hydrostatic transaxle is the drive system (I know knothing about this...is it as good as drive systems on other commercial mowers?)

Should i just spring for a well know toro, exmark or hustler....( popular in my area)

thanks

I have that engine on my Troy Bilt, I don't recommend it at all. It's a great running engine, but you can't use it on slopes and inclines. Oil gets into the muffler very easy and when it does it looks like a frieght train when I'm mowing. Kohler Command is better.

This website has been very helpful in such matters

We haven't had an issue with that engine yet, lots of 25hp courage, but no 27hp, pretty weird, I guess its a completely different design. For $4999 you are roughly $1800 lower than your comparable exmark, freedom z scag, Hustler, Gravely 2760, not sure on the toro, but I have seen the same mower, motor, and pricing pretty similiar to the Exmark. All those mowers have the 7 guage deck, 2800 transaxle, kohler courage23,25,27/briggs26/and I think the hustler offers a 19hp kawasaki (not a big fan). They are all between $6500 and $7000 depending on the engine choice. Sometimes you get a sell, but you can be pretty assured that you are looking at the $6500 price point anyways. I love the ZT badboy (for the price). What I like people to do is shop, pic out the....say exmark with the kohler courage 60" (I think its the tracer) for nearly $7000, then go to your Bad Boy dealer and see what they have to offer for $7000. You get a 30hp kohler command, dual parker hydros with 9 quart tank, 1/4" deck, if you have a dealer that will deal a little, you might get the 31hp kawasaki for that. The Exmark dealer is right up the road from us, and you ought to see people's faces when I show them our mower after they just came from the other...its priceless... We don't have a toro dealer here, but I hear they are the same engine options and prices. Here is a good example of a toro/bb/ferris example. I finally talked one of the last LCO's around here into a BB AOS 27hp lc kawasaki $8895. Helped him sell his cat diesel ferris, and he is a big toro fan. I was a little worried, cause the only toro I had ever mowed on was the $2500 at home depot... He took delivery thursday and gave me a full review yesterday. He has a 7 man crew and has the highest end service here. He said everyone fights over the mower. The toros feel like turtles now, and he says they feel alot cheaper, and the aos cuts jsut as much grass the 72" 33hp cat diesel cut and is just as comfortable with a cleaner cut. His toros have kawasaki air-cooled engines, and he said he pays close to $10000 each, he paid $18000 for the ferris. To me they look and feel like BB Pups which sell for $6195 to $7000. His whole crew and him are convinced they are swapping to pups when they start retiring the toros. I bleed orange, and I will say through experience as first cutting with these, experiencing blown away customer service, and now through my own sales as a dealer I will say do not be scared out of buying a Bad Boy because its cheaper (or simply offers waaaay more mower for your mower), they are doing something amazing with their price points, and if everyone else doesn't follow suit with suspension systems, michigan seats standard, $1200 electric accuator standard for $2000 to $7000 cheaper than offered now, there shouldn't be another brand sold until they do. Something you would like changed on the Bad Boy, give them your feedback, if it makes sense they do it, they actually listen to us for a change. Sorry long post, just sharing what I know because you will have yahoos trying to talk you out of getting a good deal on here, not just cause its a bad boy either, if or when another brand takes suit and stands out like this I will support them just as much.

Oh, the kohler courage pro is rated to be a 2000 hour engine. With proper maintenance I would expect nothing less than 1500, but when people ask around here, I lower expectations to around 1200 to 1300 because most people don't change air filters, fuel filters, change oil regular, adjust valves, just the simple maintenance that should be done. I personnally rate the 2000 standard air cooled hour machines at 1200, 3000 heavy duty air cooled at 2200, 4000 lc heavy at 3300, and 6000 diesel lc at 4500. Right now those are average life expectancies on commercial zero turns.

Internally the two engines are almost identical. They have the same bore, stroke, compression ratio etc... They both have a 25 degree limit of operation angle.

The only notable difference internally is the Command Pro uses hydraulic lifters that do not need to be periodically adjusted. The Courage engine uses a solid lifter that needs to be adjusted.

Externally is where the differences are and there really aren't that many of them. They use different air filters and for some very strange reason they spec a 100 hour fuel filter change on the Courage vs. the 200 hour change on the Command Pro. They both use the same fuel filter.

They both use a variety of carbs depending on application. The Command Pro is available with a 2 bbl carb and accelerator pump on certain models.

The governors appear to be identical.

They both use the same oil. Command Pro specs 1.7 to 1.9 quarts. Courage is 2.0 quarts. (Note: I need to use two quarts in my Command Pro 28 EFI)

There are 2 crankcase drain plugs on the Command Pro and only 1 on the Courage. This would clearly indicate a different bottom case (duh) and the reason why the Courage specs more oil.

Both are available with an engine oil cooler that is fan housing mounted. The Command Pro is available with a block mounted cooler but I've never seen one in use and I've never heard of anyone that has one.

Both are available with Oil Sentry.

Both use the same spark plugs.

It doesn't really sound like there is much of a difference between the two engines.

The "Pro" in Courage Pro is marketing BS. It's a crap engine on par with the crap briggs offers. The only decent Briggs is a Vanguard and the only decent Kohler is the Command series.
Could not agree more. Well said.

The Scag Freedom Z is not as pricey as your post states. I paid $5199 for mine with the 52 inch 26 horse briggs els.

How are you liking that Freedom-Z/26 ELS combo so far? People here dog the 26 ELS but it seems to be a decent, peppy engine for me so far (20hrs in) on my 48" Tiger Cub. Only issue I can really say so far is that the oil drain plug on the engine is a real PITA to get to on my Cub, its really in a poor spot.....

What conditions/grass type do you cut in and how does the engine handle your 52" deck?

I have 50 hours on mine so far and love it. The briggs 26 els has never bogged or hiccuped. Seems to guzzle gas to much either. I am impressed by it so far. Hopefully I will feel the same a few years down the road. My oil drain plug is in a really easy spot. Best location/ ease of use I have ever seen on anything. I but northen grasses like kentucky blue. Cuts awesome and stripes as good or better than alot of the other mowers around.

the kohler command pro's are good engines, run them all day and they are workhorses.

So are the kawasakis..neither have any plastic on them.

Do you really think an engine with plastic on top is made for heavy duty work?
I've had 3 Kohlers over the years. My 12.5 had metal covers. My 25 Command had plastic covers as does my 28 EFI Command Pro. I've had 3 Kawasaki's too. My 12.5 had metal covers. My 13 and 15 have plastic covers.

I stand corrected.

All of my kawasakis have metal covers, as do my toilets.

the zt with the 26hp briggs is on sale for $4495, alot of people are going that direction because its lower priced. The only issue we have seen with that engine is right out of the box within first 5 hours we have had a few with bad cranks (new engine sent, no problems yet out of the new ones).

How hard would it be to demo a machine retro?

48" cut
LC or AC Kawasaki or kohler engine
Manual deck lift
Suspension or not, I don't care

Sweet. Im used to a Kohler Command 16 single (great engine) on a Craftsman mower, so of course the much bigger Tiger Cub and engine is gonna suck quite a bit more gas, but its not too bad.

Yeah, I guess my oil drain plug location issue is not really a fault of the engine-- its where the rest of the Tiger Cubs bumper/frame is in relation to that plug. Its almost like they just slapped the engine on the cub without much thought into ease of getting to the drain plug and filter. One nice feature is the oil drain tube that drains the oil once you crack the plug open.

I bet the Freedom Z was designed around that engine, and therefore the frame is designed in such a way the plug is much easier to get to. From what Ive heard Scag has only recently started using the 26ELS on Tiger Cubs/Cats......

Not hard at all, I have a 52" lc kawasaki suspension, 60" 31hp kawasaki susp, 35hp cat 72" susp, a 60" lc 26hp kawa susp, a 27hp kohler zt 50", or a 28hp 60" cat susp you could demo. The only 48" BB offers is on the Pup series (no susp). You can get the 23hp vanguard, or 30hp kohler command on that mower. I have 5 or 6 customers pretty close to the shop that would let you use their 30hp kohler 48" to demo with a little heads up. That unit retails for $6495 with the kohler (thats our favorite), or $6195 with the 23hp vanguard. All BBs have the electric accuator lift on the deck. You can get the foot assist added for a little extra. I only have the foot assist on the 28hp cat and the 60" 31hp kawa you can check out. Give me a call and we can line it up (580) 317-7672 cell. We are a little low on units right now due to an unexpected rush these past couple of days, but I am going to pick up a load Tues or Wed.
