Kohler Courage SV715 engine replacement

I have a friend with a Cub Cadet tractor, LTX146(?). It has a Kohler SV715-3002 engine. The engine is about 11 years old and has nearly 500 hours. I have maintained it on an annual basis, plus some other periodic issues. It appears to have some valving issue. It began starting hard, popping with every revolution. It progressive got worse, until now it does not start, again, making a popping sound when trying to start. I was not sure if it had a leak on the intake manifold side - getting too much air. I replaced the intake manifold gaskets, plus the two carb gaskets - no change. My conclusion is something is scrambled with the valves and they are out of sync. I think this is beyond my simple understanding and capability.

Is 500 service hours a top-end life for a Courage engine? My experiences with Kohler Pro-Command demonstrates their life is way beyond these hours. But, I think Courage was intended for consumer use and 500 hours may be at life expectancy.

We have checked with a dealer - "no repair of these engines, only replacement." Another said they were willing to look at it. We are concerned cost of repair may approach the cost of a replacement engine.

The rest of the mower is in good condition. It has always been garaged. The deck is not rusted or worn. The spindles are tight. The hydro drive seems fine. Yes, it needs new front tires and new gauge wheels. But, these are simple repairs.

I have started looking for replacement engines. The engine is made for MTD, the manufacturer for Cub Cadet. This is a 3002. I see other MTD editions, 3018, ..19, .. 20, .. 23, .. 27, .. 30, .. 34. 3034 appears to be the current edition. I think the crankshaft is 1 X 3 5/16, keyed and tapped at 7/16-20. I am presuming the mounting bolt pattern the same, and assume electrical connections should work. The crank specs are my biggest concern. I am unable to find a table of the crank specs. Can anybody confirm that if Kohler made a 3002 for MTD, all future editions will have the same cranks specs?

Does anybody know availability? I have been told, "... all engines from Briggs, Kohler, Kaw are all going to build new units, and none are allocated for replacement." Is this right? In doing some searching, I find places saying they have a 3034. But, maybe they are not being honest on their web page. Any recent experiences?

Thanks.

Here is a link for the Kohler manual: https://resources.kohler.com/power/.../pdf/32_690_01_EN.pdf?_ga=2.2885680.1881013704.1664673192-1058142294.1664673192
According to Kohler’s website, this model is retired. Does not mean it can’t be fixed. These engines use a plastic camshaft gear which could be the problem. The flywheel key could be damaged causing the timing to be off.
I think your customer has several choices; have an independent shop troubleshoot the problem. Then decide if it’s worth repairing. Or find a similar unit that has a good engine and do a swap. EBay has a new engine,$1900 with shipping, don’t know if the rest of the mower is worth that amount of money. Good luck.

Thanks for your response.

I had scanned that manual.

Knowing the cam shaft is plastic may be a big clue. I do not run this machine regularly. However, I did ask him, "... sudden change, or gradual change?" "... gradual change." Something degraded over time and use. He has probably ran it 6-7 hours since he first noticed something was wrong.

If something was wrong with the camshaft, it could have started small, then grew as the plastic deformed or ????

When I replaced the manifold gaskets, I needed to take off the flywheel fan in order to remove the cowling. The bolt came out, the fan off, and the washer between the fan and flywheel came out. From the visual observation at the top, the flywheel key looked in order.

I did see a new SV715-3034 on e-bay for $999, plus shipping. I did not find another. However, I see there is an SV710 and SV720 (20, 23 hp respectively) that are probably the same space envelope. The Kohler info I have could show me which editions were MTD specific. I would think shaft size, etc. would be the same, fit-up would be the same. 20 or 23 would work for his application.

Thanks.

Before condemning the engine, I would check the valve lash, especially if you think there are issues with the valves. If they have never been checked, it's possible one or more are tight and the valves are being held open. And the courage twin does NOT have a plastic cam gear. The courage single did, and the twins replacement (7000) did for a time
