I found a Maryam's dealer rather close to my house. They carry quite a few trimmers in the 400-500 dollar range. Would you say the reliability/power is better than say a stihl product?

I would say no , but to be honest I didn't give them much of a chance we had a dealer locally pushing them pritty hard and its tempting with the 5 year warranty and all but that was the only local dealer and they went out of business last year , I took out one trimmer unit and ran in parking area but I am so use to the stihl stuff I didn't really give it much of a chance , all my small stuff I use stihl , great used resale value , easy to work on , we have a bunch of dealers locally so any thing i need one of them will probally have within reason , after that a couple years back we had some husquvarna stuff still have one of there big chain saws I thought as a over all line of products they were decent as well but never really thought the maruyama stuff was in the same category. Just my opinion and I am probally a tad bit biased so maybe some more opinions from people who have put hours on these machines is needed good luck. My list in order is Stihl , Husquvarna Red Max , Shindaiwa echo

What's wrong with echos?

It all comes down to being able to get parts and how good your dealer support is

This is the fact. I would like to try lots of different products but I know that Stihl and Hustler are what my dealer sells and that there are distro centers for each company in Orlando. This means if he has my order in before 2 today the parts will be there tomorrow with the UPS delivery. This is a no brainer for me as down time does not pay the mortgage.

nothing I think echo are fine i think as a overall package for everything and in my area Stihl is a better option for me because of dealers and a good solid line of products that work from trimmers , blowers , saws , combi system with attachments , yard boss with attachments , earth augers , back pack sprayers etc , all together stihl stuff has treated me well and i know for the area there is alot of dealer support and when i am done with something the used market for Stihl products is better at least in my area , but nothing is wrong with echo its just my preferences.

Have any of you guys tried to get a Stihl service manual? Are they available or do you have to slip your dealer a $100 under the table?
Never had a problem everytime I buy something i get the booklet , the tool and any stuff that goes with it , may be your dealer the dealer makes a huge difference , we have 5 dealers in a relativley close proximity here and there is a couple that are not that great but that is the same with everything and every brand same with mowers , whoever is the best dealer use that mower and equipment , I get use to stuff but I would change equipment in a heart beat if I did not have a good dealer to back it up , just my opinion.

Booklet? No, I'm talking about the service manual; not owners manual. Being that you can't buy anything from Stihl online including service manuals, I was wondering if they actually existed. I won't buy a piece of equipment without the corresponding service manual and illustrated parts list. I do all my own repair and maintenance.

Oh I see I was thinking of the wrong thing , honestly small engine stuff is pritty simple I have worked on many different brands and its pritty straight forward but I can see in certain situations why someone might want one but in my opinion if you are rebuilding the engine or something on one best just to get a new trimmer , one thing about stihl is that there stuff is pritty interchangable like for me instead of using the 130 combi system with a 130 engine I took a 240 engine off of a trimmer and put on my combi system give it plenty of power for extensions on the pole saw and the bed edge redifiner etc , and if an engine is bad you can change power heads pritty quick with everything basically working together , but everyone has there reasons for why they like this brand or that , they all cut grass and wich ever piece of equipment makes you feel froggy and gets you out there working and making money and being happy while you do it can't be bad , I mean if a bright shinny new craftsman is your thing then who am I to say its wrong , different strokes for different folks but me personally I like Stihl stuff , I say go with whatever makes you happy and gives you good service for the way you operate and whatever has a good dealer support in your area.

so do i. this is why dealing with sthil is so frustrating for me. you dont even know the price for a part till you go to the dealer.

i wondered for 20 years why there arnt more maruyama dealers. i talked to a retired dealer and he told me profit margins on maruyama is very thin.
Maruyama has been like the "red headed stepchild" of the lawn equipment industry. The company from what I understood, has been passed around some and factory support for dealers has been poor.

However, that being said, they are full on commercial grade quality equipment and for years had the best commercial warranty of all. Also, I believe because of their low production numbers the EPA hasn't leaned them down as much as others. Their engines have been some of the best built and the older hedge trimmer heads were built like tanks and were as almost as heavy as some.

Maruyama are good units on par with Shindaiwa and RedMax but never caught on much in the industry because of inconsistent marketing and poor dealer support. All of which should be considered when making a buying decision especially with first up, primary use units.

Those Maruyama hedge trimmers were almost legendary hardcore. Built to beat down those out of control viburnum shrubs.

I was turned on to them by Realslowww out of Gainesville. For a while there, if one appeared on Ebay, we would be in bid battle with each other for it. Seems like they are getting real hard to find now.

Having been a dealer now for a few yrs, I will say some parts have been difficult, but I now have a decent dist. so we will see if that changes. I looked about every manufacture and maruyama reminded me a lot of the old shindaiwa in which was one of the best out there imo. They use rotary valve carbs walbro carbs, imo 10 times the carb the Zama's are. there warranty is 5 yr and so far has been excellent, I do not know about sthils. one will find less on ebay as they have stepped up to try to control it. Also I have been around long enough to see the demise of homelite and mac, and echo when they went big box , now sthil products can be bought in some of the true value stores, it cannot be a good thing for quality control
