MTD Yard Machine problems with engaging blade belt drive

I've got an old MTD Yard Machine 46" cut riding mower that I bought last year mainly for the engine. It has a B&S 21 H.P. OHV I/C V-Twin, model 407777 engine. Found out I didn't need to use the engine after all so decided to let it sit over winter. Now I am trying to fix it for my grandson as his lawnmower broke down. I'm having a problem with engaging the blade drive belt. As I try to slowly engage the lever & the belt tightens the engine starts to die. If I try to do it fast, you smell burnt rubber from the belt, & the engine stops suddenly & I'm afraid I'll cause the motor to lock up. I have the engine running with the throttle wide open. I know my battery is weak because I have to leave a charger on it to keep it charged, so I don't know if that has anything to do with the motor wanting to die when engaging the belt drive. It wasn't having this problem when I bought it before I stored it for the winter. It's just happened since I brought it out of storage. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Well, I finally took the deck off the lawn mower & flipped it over. I found the problem. I had taken all 3 blades off to get them sharpened & when I put them back on, I put one of the long blades in the short blade's place. That long blade in the center was hitting the deck side freezing all 3 blades. That's what happens when you don't pay attention to how you took the blades off. Thanks again guys for all your help. 75 year old brain fog. lol

Belt routing was not changed since I bought it, & at that time it ran & cut grass. I'm thinking it may be in the wiring possibly. There were some wires Jerry rigged, & I taped them together. It starts fine with a new battery, but I'm wondering if I wired a safety cut off wire to something that may have caused this problem. I'll double check the pulleys though. Thanks for your input guys.
