Neighbor Complained about Me Mowing Late

Ok, I've had a couple of customers complain about me coming to mow their lawn in evening before, but never had a complaint from a neighbor about it. One of my best customers lives down a private driveway with 3 houses on it. Their lawn has been struggling a bit to get growing this season. It was installed as sod but it isn't irrigated and they fertilize it themselves. They fertilize sparingly because they're next to a river and don't want to pollute it. Anyway, the last time I let it go 2 weeks and parts of it got really long. My schedule got messed up a bit last week because my helper couldn't work with me. So it's 6:00 pm Friday and I figure I've got time for one more lawn. It was between this customer and one other, so I decided to give them a call and give them first dibs on whether they wanted a cut. They say yes, come on down. Note: I have to back down several hundred feet so even though its nearby, I don't want to just go down there and find it doesn't need it.

So now it's 6:15 and I start cutting. About 15 minutes into the job the next door neighbor comes over while I'm mowing. I shut down my mower to see what he wants. I've talked to them several times before, they seem like really nice people. He's obviously agitated and tells me that 6:30 pm on a Friday evening is no time to be cutting a lawn, he's trying to relax on his patio and have a cocktail. I tell him I'm sorry if I'm disturbing him but I called and checked first and that they said it was ok. He says, well you didn't check with me, don't do it again, and storms off. In the interest of professionalism, I won't tell you what I thoght to myself when he said that, lol. I was polite and professional talking to him, but I did say that it WAS for me when he said it was no time to be mowing. I don't know if he expected me to stop or what, but I wasn't about to so I finished up as quietly I could, which really just means I tried to keep the trimmer and blower rpms down. Not much I can do about the 17 kawi on the mower. Their patio is about 150 feet away from the nearest part of my customer's lawn by the way....not exactly right there or anything.

Now I'm sure as hell not going to start calling neighbors of my customers to see if it's ok for me to mow and I really don't think it was unreasonable for me to be there, especially with my customer's approval. I mean, it's pretty common for homeowners to mow their lawn in the evening after work. After I was done I went and mowed one of my own vacant lots and then got home after dark. One of my neighbors was out cutting his lawn with his headlights shining on the lawn actually.

So the next day I just emailed my customer and alerted them to the issue along with telling them that part of the new grass I planted was drying out and in desperate need of water.

So what's do you guys use as a rule for when it's too late to mow in a residential area? I really can't be letting neighbors of my customers run my business but I don't want to piss them off either. Your thoughts? Personally I think the guy was just having a bad day or something. Either that or he just has an overwhelming false sense of propriety.

First IU have no thoughts on this , but I will tell you . That most neigborhoods that are gated and garded will not let you in untill 8 am and have to be out by 6 at the latest.

What torks me off is when they get in here on a Saturday at 7:30 am. or they show up at 4 when the pool party is in full swing.

I start at 7:15 , the first one is at 7:45 commerical,,,,,,,,,,, then the rest fall behind. try too finish before 3pm............... no lunch till i get home.

I would have waited till the helper was able to run with you.

sounds like an a hole to me, i would just notify the customer, and pay no attention to him. if the situation arises again, well, i would not be as professional to say the least.

it is like a person coming out to complain to us we parked in front of their house to service across the street. we dont set foot on thier property, are gone in 15 min, and it is apublic street! sorry, request denied as i am going the way i parked and am not turning around just to have to do it again for a 15 min job

People tell me that a few times a year. I try not to park in front of the lawn I service cause it's hard to get the grass out from under the truck and trailer and then it looks like I didn't blow off the street. I've been having trouble with the mail man not delivering to the houses I park at even though I'm a good 10ft from the mailbox, it's not like I block it. You could put that mail truck in the back of my truck, so it's not like he doesn't have room. I can't be parking 500ft away from every house.

I second the ahole. Look around throughout the week, especially Fridays. People just get off work at 5pm come home eat dinner and go out and cut their grass. My response to people when they act like that is, when you start paying me to mow I'll start listening to you. If your not my customer I don't want to hear it.

I can't believe that, there were still 2 more hours of daylight left.

Yah, I've had them too, and got forbid my trailer tire is 6 inches on their lawn, which by the way is town property. Down in our beach area, you literally have no choice but to get up on the lawn a little or you'll block traffic.

Here's the email I sent my customer the following morning. The names have been changed to protect the innocent, lol.

Good morning Ralph and Judy:

I just wanted to bring 2 issues to your attention

1) Bart Tumbleweed did not appear to appreciate me mowing yesterday evening. He walked over and complained. I told him I was sorry if I was disturbing him but I had called and checked with you first and you said it was OK. He said I didn't check with him and not to do it again. He wasn't particulary nice about it but I wouldn't call it a heated confrontation either. I tried to be as respectful as possible. I resumed mowing and finished up as quietly as I could.

2) Some of the newly seeded areas are burning out and in desperate need of water, particularly the area near the Tumbleweed's property line and the area where you had the septic repair done.

Take care and have a good weekend.

Darryl

many of my neighbors are mowing up to 8pm some times. sun going down..bit cooler..and home from their 9-5 job so out comes mower around 6pm to get lawn mowed before shower.. I'd rather hear my neighbors mower than a neighbor having a drunk-fest party until wee hours. If the guy you mow for was out doing his own lawn..I bet the neighbor would not have said nothing. Things happen- can't go like clock work every day in this buisness...so just forget about it. I'm kind of thinking the two neighbors don't get along all that well so he is just stirring the pot with you in the middle? brush him off- you do what the man giving you the check wants and then only if it can be worked out in your schedule. I'm thankfull for my neighbors..I could set off a Claymore mine and they'd not say a word. I try to do little things for them all- one of the benefits even thou not the reason I do it is it builds up a good relationship so I can get away with noise from grinding, ect.

It's a good thing the guy doesn't live next to us. Between the beagle barking at the neighbors cats (and anything else that moves), my kids on their 2 stroke motocross bikes, the mini skateboard park off the back deck and my kids and their "music", he'd probably have a nervous breakdown. One of my sons plays electric guitar and the other is a drummer. That 100 watt Marshall amp, the double bass pedals on the drums and that freakin 20 inch china cymbal make a pretty good racket. Oh, and the "harmonic squeals" on guitar...they only play heavy metal. We did have one complaint about the motocross bikes, a lady came over and asked us to turn them down (and went right past the no trespassing sign to get to the house I might add). My wife told her it was our property and they were having fun. That's my girl!!!!

Sounds like a bully.
That would be my neighbor next to my vacant back lot, lol. He actually came out and gave me a hard time about where I parked my truck and trailer to mow the lot that same evening, which was wholly and entirely on my property and outside of his right-of-way across my property. That was right after leaving my customer's and getting chewed out there. He actually poked me in the face at one point and dared me to hit him, adding that he was a cop for 38 years. Even better is that his wife had the nerve to call the cops on me for walking my dog down there Wednesday nite...on my property. Not my fault they bought a property embedded in mine! I hate people, lol.

I was out walking my 2 dogs a few days ago and my dog crapped on the strip between the sidewalk and road,I picked up the poop and was walking away when some guy comes out with a camera and takes my picture. He tells me I'm only allowed to walk the dog in the road, I tell him why don't you come here and tell my dog that? When you do he will bite your head off; he's 110lb mountain dog quite ferocious, the guy thought better of it and backed off. I was thinking of roundup ice cubes for the guys lawn, but my better judgment prevailed.

2 problems here one is it takes you 15 minutes to back down the drive way. I hope that is in the bid. 2nd is you do not have to check in with him. I mow clean up to 9:00 at night dont like it get some one else!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL, doesn't take 15 mins to back down the drive. I had stopped back at home. Was 15 mins from the time I called until I got there. It's about an hour to service the account, including backing down and it's a $60 mow, plus any disposal and plenty of extras. I've billed them over $3,200 so far this year, so pretty good account. And I usually don't check. Like I said the lawn growth has been spotty and I wasn't sure if it would need it so I called. Usually I work til dark myself, as necessary.

There's that false sense of propriety again, lol.

I always finish my residentials by 6:00 pm but that A hole neighbor would make me think about installing some headlights on my Scag! :hammerhead:

I cut until it is dark. Some areas like the Country Club want you out at about 7:00, Commercial's I'd do earliest and latest to avoid vehicles. If it is *too* late I generally go to a house that is empty or unoccupied, or bank owned and do it. In the winter it gets dark around 5:00 and now it gets dark around 9:00 so I do my math. No issues with it in general.

My neighbor was just out mowing his lawn at like 9pm the other week. He sometimes cuts his lawn with the headlights on his lawn tractor when there is less day light. And it usually takes him 2 hours to mow his lawn that should take him 1 hour. So sometimes I have to listen to him mow until well after 9:30pm....

So I would say that you were within a reasonable time.

Why dont you get up a little earlier and you wont have to work so late. You said you started at 11:30 am one morning last week and after 1 in the afternoon another. I wouldnt worry about the neighbor but it sounds like if you got your butt out of bed in the morning you wouldnt have to worry at all.
Boy, seems like everyone has a false sense of propriety these days. What are you doing, keeping my time sheet for me? I get up by 7:00 every morning FYI. Like I already said, my helper wasn't available. I didn't know he wouldn't be until late in the day so I ended up there later than I had planned. For the record, my helper is my son and he helps me a few days a week after school, when he can. He was supposed to work that Friday but called and asked if he could have the day off to go to swimming and I said OK. And as far as this week, I don't know what the weather was up in Mass, but it was wet here.

I Don't mean to be a jerk, but who the hell do you think you are judging me for what time I start mowing? You have no idea what else I have going on in my life. Personally I think you're just jealous because you have to work 15 hours a day to make a living with your lowball prices :p

last week we had alot of rain and thursday was 7:00 first lawn and 9:45 last lawn, yeah it was dark. I met with a commercial acct. the following monday and he commented on me being there late last week (his residential acct) and said "Hey, I appreciate a guy willing to do what it takes to get it done. I'm a small business owner too and sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do." This mentality separates people like us who know what it takes to make things happen and are willing to do it, and people like the ahole neighbor who just want something to ***** and moan about while sipping a cocktail on the patio. As far as I'm concerned, sun up to sundown Mon-Sat is open for business. I try to keep it 8am-6pm scheduling commercial properties at not so ideal mowing times but sometimes you just gotta get it done.

By the way...it was wet here too but we really have no choice but to work in the wet weather. Unless it is raining hard we are working.
