Ok, I've had a couple of customers complain about me coming to mow their lawn in evening before, but never had a complaint from a neighbor about it. One of my best customers lives down a private driveway with 3 houses on it. Their lawn has been struggling a bit to get growing this season. It was installed as sod but it isn't irrigated and they fertilize it themselves. They fertilize sparingly because they're next to a river and don't want to pollute it. Anyway, the last time I let it go 2 weeks and parts of it got really long. My schedule got messed up a bit last week because my helper couldn't work with me. So it's 6:00 pm Friday and I figure I've got time for one more lawn. It was between this customer and one other, so I decided to give them a call and give them first dibs on whether they wanted a cut. They say yes, come on down. Note: I have to back down several hundred feet so even though its nearby, I don't want to just go down there and find it doesn't need it.
So now it's 6:15 and I start cutting. About 15 minutes into the job the next door neighbor comes over while I'm mowing. I shut down my mower to see what he wants. I've talked to them several times before, they seem like really nice people. He's obviously agitated and tells me that 6:30 pm on a Friday evening is no time to be cutting a lawn, he's trying to relax on his patio and have a cocktail. I tell him I'm sorry if I'm disturbing him but I called and checked first and that they said it was ok. He says, well you didn't check with me, don't do it again, and storms off. In the interest of professionalism, I won't tell you what I thoght to myself when he said that, lol. I was polite and professional talking to him, but I did say that it WAS for me when he said it was no time to be mowing. I don't know if he expected me to stop or what, but I wasn't about to so I finished up as quietly I could, which really just means I tried to keep the trimmer and blower rpms down. Not much I can do about the 17 kawi on the mower. Their patio is about 150 feet away from the nearest part of my customer's lawn by the way....not exactly right there or anything.
Now I'm sure as hell not going to start calling neighbors of my customers to see if it's ok for me to mow and I really don't think it was unreasonable for me to be there, especially with my customer's approval. I mean, it's pretty common for homeowners to mow their lawn in the evening after work. After I was done I went and mowed one of my own vacant lots and then got home after dark. One of my neighbors was out cutting his lawn with his headlights shining on the lawn actually.
So the next day I just emailed my customer and alerted them to the issue along with telling them that part of the new grass I planted was drying out and in desperate need of water.
So what's do you guys use as a rule for when it's too late to mow in a residential area? I really can't be letting neighbors of my customers run my business but I don't want to piss them off either. Your thoughts? Personally I think the guy was just having a bad day or something. Either that or he just has an overwhelming false sense of propriety.
