New Echo PAS-2620 vs Slightly Used PAS-280

My previous thread

I'm still researching and trying to figure out what to buy. I'm leaning towards Echo again, as I've always had Echo and loved it. I have zero experience with Stihl but have owned a BMW so am familiar with annoying German overengineering and the problems that come with it.

That being said, I'm a bit disappointed that the new Echo 2620 is only 25cc. I found a slightly used PAS-280 (28cc) for sale. I'd rather buy new so I know that from day one it was obsessively cared for. But I'd also like a little more power than 25cc.

My first inclination was to go right for the Stihl 131 but I've found too many people saying it has too much power for string trimming landscaped lawns. This is the bulk of my work (with occasional thicker grass/brush).

Am I overthinking this? Am I going to be hurting for power with the 2620? Is the 280 noticeably better?

I have never been a fan of Stihl blowers or Trimmers. Their saws are decent. With that said, the echo/shindy units are decent. I'm curious why the 25cc unit isn't enough power? I used to use the 22cc echo and that did 99% of the lawns without issue. I can't imagine needing more than 25. If that's not enough but you like the weight, port the muffler and I bet you pick up enough power to make it comparable to the larger motor.

I have two 280’s and a 2620. I can assure you that the 2620 will overmatch the 280. There isn’t much that it couldn’t handle without having to step up to a machine that weighs too much to lug around all day.

I switched to Echo this year and started with a 2620 and a 3020. I use the 2620 80% of the time and it's great. I did swap out the guard with the same guard as the 3020 to give me a wider cut. I also swapped out the smaller SpeedFeed head for the larger model. That set-up makes the 2620 one of the best trimmers I've had since we started going to all this Carb crap. That means well over 15 years ago.

Thanks to everyone's feedback I was ready to pull the trigger on the 2620. I was going to the dealer tomorrow but I happened to check Craigslist today and found this set. Just went and picked it up. It's not a brand new 2620 but I think it's a hell of a deal:

PAS-265 power head (25.4cc)
Cultivator
Straight Hedge Trimmer
Pole saw
Tube extension
Brush cutter (I'm going to put my Speedfeed 450 head on this)

This set has maybe 5 hours on it. Everything is immaculate and looks new. No oil anywhere, everything's dry and clean. The stickers aren't even faded or wrinkled. I paid $400 (plus $60 in gas to get there and back). Tomorrow I'm going to buy the edger attachment and them I'm golden. I may sell the cultivator at some point.

I'd love to have the 2620 at some point but for now I'm super stoked that I got this deal.

Good deal 👍
That powerhead has been used on power pole saw and trimmers for years it's a good unit
