I have always done split applications of dimension19-0-6 .10 but due mainly to cost was
considering switching to a granular form of prodiamine .I like to hear some opinions of people who have used both and their comparisons of both .

In my experience dimension is a superior product. I have only used it in a liquid program at NY rates(which are lower than other states) and have had amazing results. Prodiamine though effective does not last as long and does not have the benefit of early stage post emergent control like Dimension. If you were doing split apps with Dimension at lower rates realize you will need a full rate of Prodiamine with a half rate second app about 4 weeks apart for good control. . I used to do that but i'm a firm believer going late with preemergent (mid to late May) for good control. Dimension in a liquid program would be cost effective.

How long each lasts depends on how much you apply. Don't use minimum rates and you should be OK. Calibrate carefully--try to hit the rate exactly or at least between 100 and 110 percent of the ideal rate Also, keep in mind you can save money if you put the chemical where the problem lies. Suppose you can apply a bit extra where the crabgrass has been or is suspected to be a problem...or if there are crabgrass prone areas or areas that have a history of crabgrass infestation; the label usually permits more in these cases. You can use less where there is shade or top quality turf.
This means perhaps walk slow in areas with a crabgrass problem. Practice walking 25 percent slower. Or maybe hum a sad slow song.

Riggle is right on going heavier on known infestations. I always go harder along driveway edges near the block as these are prone areas. Shady area are usually fine. Sometimes i get a new place and have no idea what it was like the previous year so i look for dead patches of crabgrass or bare spots.

Your comments are misleading. For YOUR area, the max rate of prodiamine is HALF of what the OP is allowed to use. Secondly in YOUR area you cannot apply prior to April 1. At recommended label rates (not being specific to state regs), prodiamine lasts considerably longer than Dimension. Iv'e been doing this for over 20 years now and I can tell you...apples to apples...prodiamine lasts longer. The benefit of prodiamime to the OP is that in theory he can go out super early and be done with his accounts before you even start for the season. On the other hand, if you are talking about using a pre that is mixed with a fert, this conversation is years away from making sense to you and you would probably want to use dimension as it will allow much more leeway in your app timing. Keep in mind that although you see people selling and using pre with fert, it's almost always the worst thing you can do to a lawn. Not only is spring fed grass a bad idea (from a horticultural perspective) but mixing fert with herbicides does not allow you to taylor specific areas with their individual needs.

Your good on your statement except about the April 1st date. That only applies to fertilizer. You can start you per-emergent apps whenever you want as long as there is no fertilizer involved.

I have only used prodiamine w/fert. In my experience i believe it does not last 3 mo. at the full rate. Many factors are an issue here and i cant comment on using prodiamine by itself on a potassium carrier at the full rate since i have only use 1/2 rate with these. I tend to go later here on Eastern LI due to the temps being cooler and Dimension worked better for me on known infestations starting mid May. Crabgrass here kicks in mid/late June right through end of Aug. I see people here doing there first round April 1 with Prodiamine/fert. there window ends early. This of course is my observation. I am a firm beleiver in going late, i can always cleanup early germination instead of late bloomers when the AI is finished up.

I have used Prodiamine (Pro) and Dimension (dim) for about 10+ years in MA, liquid apps. Pro, for me, has better weed control than dim. I used split apps and #1 is pro and 7 weeks later is dim (ec or 2ec).

Dim does not stain like pro but if you are smart about it, it is a nice product.
