Well I went ahead and pulled the trigger for the new 36" Gravely. :dancing:

The spring growth has slowed down quite a bit, I'm tired of having to use my 30" as a mulch machine rather then the 36", talked to the dealer, he said he'd throw in a free pair of mulch blades, and install the mulch kit for free upon pickup. So my Gravely 36" will be a mulching machine within a week. I'll let you guys know how it goes. :weightlifter:

That kit looks easy to install compared to the one that my Wright and Toro use. Shouldn't take but 10 minutes to remove.

I wonder if that's the kit that they ordered. Sounds about right $82 vs. $75. I'd be happy with that kit I think rather then just a block off plate. Looks like a full mulch kit with the baffle, block off, and blades. That's more of what I was hoping it was. Also the install on that one doesn't look as bad compared to what I hear some of you guys going through!

I don't know if that is the kit. I seen it listed for 2009 and later but didn't see your model 988151 listed.
I guess time will tell. I'll let you know exactly what it is when it comes in. I should have asked for more details, but I was busy when I placed the call. As long as it's a full "mulch kit" with the baffle, I think I'll be satisfied.

Update and a question for you guys.

So today I talked to the dealership, he looked up the order and told me the kit was on back order and told me it's going to be a month before I could get the mulch kit in. Called another dealer, he told me the same thing. I found the kit in stock 45 minutes down the road, so I shot down there and grabbed it since it was high on my priority list. (I took the hybrid and saved gas at least!)

Now to the fun part, I got back and thought I was going to rush and put it on quickly so I could get back to work. Well, you probably know as well as I do, that didn't happen. :nono: Installed it, after 30 minutes of frustration, I finally got it lined up and got it on. Crank of the Gravely, and clack clack. The blades are in contact with the mulch kit. So I get to further looking around, calling the dealer, a mechanic, nobody knows what's going on. Turns out I needed to take the hammer and tap the baffle under the deck and run the curve on the baffle outside of the discharge chute rather then the inside. I beat on it a few minutes and got it to all line up, put it back together. And now I'm mulching.

The first lawn, was a weekly that got skipped for a week. The grass is fertilized and irrigated so it got pretty tall after they wanted to skip the week before. I finish up the lawn and notice some stragglers with each pass. I ran over it a second time, after the second time it looked like a baseball field compared to when I was discharging. The second pass took out the stragglers and the grass that had grown tall, the clippings we're now undetectable. The lawn looked excellent.

Now I know I can't mow every lawn twice, nor can I afford to unless I'm getting paid double. So now I'm looking for suggestions. The mulch kit came with a baffle that's one piece, curves around, and also covers up the discharge chute. The kit did not come with mulching blades. So I currently have the high lifts on there. Do I need to switch to mulching blades, if so are there any suggestions? I thought I read somewhere someone mentioned to run high lifts with the mulch kit. But I've also read someone said don't install the kit without the blades. My high lifts we're sharp, but would love to hear opinions on whether or not I need mulching blades for this kit!

Never used one before let us know how hard it is to get on and off and the results of the cut.

I had the same problem at first. the mulch blades make a huge difference. my kit didn't come with any blades either.. I figured it out after the first week when everything i cut looked like crap. I got the wavy blades and was in business then.. I use my 36 with mulch kit on about everything and it does fine, i don't have to double cut. Most of my lawns latley are weekly or don't grow very fast so it works well. It was a pain to install that much kit too.

Well I ordered a bulk order of the wavy mulch blades I think should have been included with the kit. We'll see if these things mulch any better within the next week!

Good to hear I'm not solo on the install or the blades! ;) I figured having the wavy blades would make a big difference considering that's all I read people like to run with the full kits. I ordered quite a few of them so hopefully I won't have to worry about blades all year!

they are a pain to sharpen though.
I can see that being so with the way they are shaped. I'm thinking about doing them the old school way using a file, I feel it will probably be easier and safer without damaging the wavy blades or taking off too much metal with those curvy bends. I hear someone now saying sharpening multiple blades by file? Heck, I have to use my angle grinder or bench grinder in the garage shooting sparks up while being out in the heat. I work in the heat all dang day, I can take that file, sit on the couch in the air conditioner, kick back, drink a cold one, watch a tv show, and file on them on the weekends.

Quick question. What mower do you have the mulch kit and wavy blades on? I got 6 of them in the mail today and these things are absolute garbage. Not to say we didn't buy a different brand and possibly even a different lift. I ordered mine online and these things leave a mo-hawk down every stripe. I tried them all day on different lawns. One lawn I didn't have to cut not once, not twice, but three times. Now I'm frustrated on why in the world I ordered six of them without test running one set.

check the length?
I checked them compared to the high lifts. They are both the same. I noticed these have a much lower lift. I think that's the issue. The high lifts turned out not to be all that bad and do a half way decent job, they just have a crappy blow out under hard surfaces. Haven't tried to adjusting the pitch to see if that helps with the blow-out on the high lifts, that's probably my next step. For now, back to the high lifts I go.

Now I've been doing some thinking. I've been running two spacers on the blades rather then the original three because I've been cutting St. Augustine quite a bit and needed to raise the deck a bit higher then it would go. Could the missing spacer be causing me to lose vaccum and causing the blow-out and poor cutting with the mulch kit?

So I solved the problem and the cut quality is excellent! I thought on it hard last night, and figured it had to be a vacuum issue with the kit and only having two spacers on there. I threw the third one on last night and ran it all day. Cut like a brand new machine and exceeded by expectations by far! The clippings were cut up so small they weren't noticeable when looking at the lawn from a distance or even up close. I mulched thick St. Augustine that I cut up on 4+ inches and Bermuda and both did excellent! Happy Camper and thumbs up for the wavy blades with three spacers! If anyone has a similar issue the blade spacers would be one of the first on the check list for me.

PicturePerfect... I have a Gravely pro-1334g WB with a Mulchkit Installed that I use on just my lawn... It mulches great and saves me time, but I seem to get a little bit of clippings that come up on top of my deck through the discharge plate cover and from under the top deck cover... It has gotten annoying so I took a look underneath and noticed some gaps between the top of the baffles and the bottom of the deck... I'm thinking they shouldn't be there and if you agree, any ideas as to how to seal them up?

Thanks

Mcarlo, could you take some pictures of the gap and the install under the deck and I'll see if I can help you out. To tell you the truth, when I put on mine I had a gap at the discharge shoot around the very top when I first installed it. It took me some hammering with a heavy hammer and loosening and bolt wrenching to get that gap out of there. When I first installed it, the bolts all lined up perfectly, however the bottom of the mulch kit under the deck was sticking out past the bottom lip of the deck. I had to take a heavy hammer and literally knock it up "in" the deck so it wasn't sticking out past that bottom of the deck. After that it tightened up and took the gaps up. I'm not an expert with them, but if you send some pictures over I'll see if there's anything I can do to help you. Also did yours include sort of like a discharge chute cover? Mine didn't include a cover. My mulch baffle curves around and covers up the discharge chute.

Why does everyone always use the phrase "pulled the trigger" to describe a new equipment purchase? It sounds stupid, and it's inappropriate lingo given all the gun violence going on.
