Stihl has not had the top performing bp since the BR400 in the late 90’s. Echo finally took the crown from RedMax after a 20yr run so maybe it’s Stihls turn again with the BR900.

always fun to get a new bp right before the leaves drop so rooting for RedMax or Stihl to try and dethrone the 9010

Stihl already has a 79cc 2 stroke fuel injected engine in their 500I saw. That would be a perfect platform engine to try to beat all the other big names and the CFM wars. Just be ready to shell out the $$$$.
A Stihl engineering rep told me at open house 4 years ago they were working on one, but it was taking a back seat to the electric crap and a few other items they wanted to get out first.

A lot of guys do and I won't knock anyone that does, but I just happen prefer the one mine has over the telescoping version which was one big reason I went with the X. That and the fact it is several pounds lighter. I really love my BR800 overall, especially compared to the 8010 I also own.
I just noticed you seem to prefer the Stihl over Echo 8010 - and you were an Echo guy. I purchased a 8010 for my guys to try but they didn't like the tube.... preferring the Husky 580's. I'm getting ready to purchase new backpacks so your observations on the Stihls would be appreciated.

I have owned a few other pieces fromEcho in the past, but they were used units given to me, so actually, the 8010 is my first new Echo ever, so not really an Echo guy per say, but the raw power of the 8010 is unreal. It is like Joed said though, sometimes a bit too uncontrollable. That is a big reason I prefer the 800. That and the fact it is lighter a little bit, but so much more comfortable to wear and run for more than 15 min to a half hour. I greatly prefer the X version over the heavier and more expensive C model too.

At first, I wasn't to crazy about the sound of the 800. It's more throaty than my 600 was, but the 4 mixes usually bug my ears. I have grown very used to it and now my 2 strokes sound harsh to me LOL when I first start using them again.. The sound of the 800 will give you the false impression that it seems gutless at first, and mine did take longer to break in and gain full power than my other BP's ever have, but it is a very stout unit and IME/IMO, stouter than the Husky580/RM 8500 and much lighter and again, more comfortable to use. I have been a 2 stroke fan for BP's until this 800. Now, if Stihl does bring out a bigger model and can keep the weight anywhere close to the 800's, I will buy one asap even if it still doesn't quite match the 9010 or is at least very close t the 8010. So far, my 800 hasn't given me a lick of trouble, and I have used it a LOT since I bought it a year and half ago. All last winter, all this past winter and all last summer and fall and the fall I got it, it. It is about the only BP I grab anymore, which is saying something because I LOVE my 802.

One last point- like I said, I have had no trouble whatsoever, but I am solo and I take great care of my stuff. Still, I am not reading or hearing about guys having problems with the 800 like I do with many other blowers, and my dealer doesn't seem to have them piled up in the back waiting for repair like he does at times with other brands. If the problems exist, I simply haven't heard anything so far.

My only concern is the 4-mix aspect. You seem to be the blower guru around here so I will pick one up and see what my guys think. Thanks for the info.

The tube has been fixed. Would try the 9010 before buying an 800. I have an 800 and it’s no better than my Shin 854’s. Good for 95% of blowing sure but so are plenty of other blowers. It’s the 5% that makes the serious $$$$ here in the Fall.

I do like BP's as they're my favorite HH to run, but I am guessing there are many more guys here that know a lot more than me about the subject LOL. I have tried to avoid the 4 mixers due to the valves etc, but IME, they very seldom need any attention and when they do, it is an easy job to do once you get the specialty feeler gauge for a couple bucks from your dealer. I know that there is a right way and a wrong way to adjust the valves though contrary to what some may claim about them. Once you find that little silver tab on the flywheel and line it up with the arrow, setting the vales is a snap.

Neither the 8010 (new version, nor the 9010) are as nice to swing the tube on as the 800. That's just a fact. They aren't a comfortable to wear either. Stihl has that down well. Echo still needs to work on that aspect.

That so called 5% is not where most money is made either. That's just common sense logic, though you like to argue contrary to anything I post thus the reason for your post.

I still haven't got over buying fs110's (10+ years ago - to replace fs80's) that were nothing but problems (w/ Stilhl accusing me of running diesel) - but I digress. In 07-08 I replaced the br400's with RM8500's replacing those with 580's. The RM and HQ stuff has been super reliable and I hate to switch but something different might be in order.

I've been waiting on RM/HQ to match the output of the Echo but they don't seem to be in much of a hurry to do so. I have heard from several people that the 800 is comparable to the 600's comfort so I'm curious to find out.

They are just as comfortable to run. I had the 600 several years ago and kinda wish I had kept it around. It's hard to get away from what works for you, but being solo and having back up units ready, I get to try lots of different things out to see just what works and doesn't. My Husky 570 was very reliable and other than that awful side mounted throttle, I really liked it. My 802 has been one of the most reliable HH's I have ever owned. maybe even the most reliable. We shall see how the 800 holds up, but so far, it has been flawless. Starts easy/fast when cold and is ready to go almost instantly in the cold and is so, when warm out. What's nice about the 600/800 units is that you don't have to run them at WOT to get near the top performance. Any 2 stroke I have owned (and that's been a lot of them now) really needs to be run at or near the top to get the performance from them. The 4 mixers have a lot of blowing power/force right from just above idle on up.

I have an FS 90 I have used for all sorts of stuff other than trimming. It is mainly used for edging, but does shrub trimming, pole pruning, and power sweeping as well. It can get cantankerous at times and I have to adjust the valves every so often, but then again, it is 10 years old now, so overall I am pretty satisfied with it for anything but trimming. The 4 mix trimmers are either on or off with the trigger/throttle and that sucks. The BP's are not like that at all, so not sure why Stihl can't get the trimmers to run the same as the BP's.

Would wait see if Stihl or Echo comes out w/something to compete w/9010. Dealer here sells decent volume Echo snd Stihls says Stihl starting to lose sales after the initial bump when 800 was released.

Holding off on any more bp’s until GIE or Oct

Stihl or RedMax. RM had one in the field testing last year just before CV hit so that one probably more likely to challenge 9010 dominance before a Stihl BR900
