interesting issue happening. Engines a kaw fh480v ds20. Just started happening and atm intermittent, either starter gear (maybe called pinion gear, not sure) but will spin up and engage flywheel and engine starts or starter gear will mesh up with flywheel and here's my issue, it will not turn and pretty much stick. Times it will release but had to spin flywheel to release. starter motor works either way. Someone mentioned it sounds like an issue with the gear assembly but just wondering could this sound like something cause by a weakening battery. Long story short, got the battery from bout two yrs ago, they ordered the wrong one so used the one he had. Was a smaller battery but gave me nice discount to go with a gurrentee, (if I spelled that right). Anyways pretty sure it's the starter but wondering by chance my discounted battery could be coming back to bite me.

Here is a link to the service manual for your engine

Make sure your starter mounting bolts are tight. if they are tight.....
Your starter pinion gear assembly rides on the armature shaft. The assembly is either worn or requires lubrication. Section 8 is the starter section. If the starter has hours on it, I would replace it. I have nothing but good things to say about this vendor.

Thanks for the help and the links. Saw that name in the one link for an aftermarket starter, been looking to see if could find an aftermarket starter gear assembly with no luck. Not sure it's doable atm. Meantime cleaned it up, it was sticking pretty bad after I got it off, no more sticking. Gonna see that works, guess I got nothing to loose, but time maybe. Thought it but will see.

Yup, seamed to work for now. Although that dang weak xxx, gurrenteed battery's not looking to good ATM, with me doing the on off starts. Looks like a new battery to go with a starter on the list. Probably would of just picked up new starter without this monkeying around but things had gone sideways from lost work due to health issues last couple yrs. Good note things have/were trending for the better this yr at least, till it stopped raining. So sorry to waste your time on that deal. Anyways, new battery and starter, think I'll be good. thanks again u guys are best.
