I am considering using tenacity to kill crabgrass, goosegrass, spurge, nutsedge and a variety of other weeds. It has been too hot here to spray lately and I missed a small window of opportunity last week. I will be slit seeding and overseeding some lawns coming up soon. I was worried about needing to wait 2 weeks after spraying to spread seed. I came across tenacity. Do you have any advice on using it? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Overseed with Fescue?

While I only maintain a few Fescue lawns here in Oklahoma I personally feel it's a little late to attack some of the weeds you listed. Translocation of herbicides stop or are greatly decreased when most annual weeds reach maturity. Likewise most of want you listed are annuals except Nutsedge. I personally wouldn't worry about those unless the infestation could compromise the results. On the other hand I would definitely use the tenacity when overseeding for its pre-emergent qualities not for the post-emergent uses.

The weeds are definitely mature. This is my first year offering weed control so I am still learning. I do not know what stage the goosegrass is at, but I am pretty sure it is stage 4. It grows a foot tall every week. I need to slit seed this backyard but it is completely full of goosegrass. I am concerned it will steal nutrients from the tall fescue I am planting.

I just sprayed about 14,000 sq ft with Tenacity yesterday morning in prep for an overseed. I wanted to get any weeds out of the way so they don’t get in the way or rob water and sunlight from grass seedlings. Label says you can seed with no wait. I give it a couple weeks to zap whatever it can. I especially don’t like to seed into dense nutsedge. It grows fast and can get very dense — nasty weed that chokes out grass.

I went with the high rate of 8 oz per acre (16 oz per acre per year is label max). Label also says blanket apps are ok in prep for an overseed. Use NIS. Have at it.

Just remember to read the label and understand what it kills and what it does not! If your trying to knock a little NS out of lawn and you don't recognize that a population of Bent has residence, you might be in for a renovation on your dime. Warn then it takes time and weeds turn white, so they don't freakout like I had a customer do....LOL

So I should inform the customers the weeds will turn more white than brown?

I have read the label. I have also read the labels for Quinclorac, Round-up quick pro, Momentum, Speed Zone, Triclopyr and Sedge Hammer. I wanted to get on here to converse with people who have used these products to make sure I do everything properly; especially when it is a new product to me and I haven’t sprayed it yet.

YOU SHOULD READ THE LABLE IN FULL REGARDLESS- Put the 16 pages near the toilet

In my experience tenacity turns the target broad leaf weeds bleech white and the grass type weeds more a neon green color shade

+1 on the client freak-out even if you tell them

I generally use it at a 6oz spot spray rate (over the max 8oz) because I work in tall fescue which the label says to even drop as low as 4oz per acre... I'm under the assumption that @ 4oz you WILL have to do two treatments...6oz tends to do the trick in one shot unless it's dense.

its my POA go to and early early spring user....I have better results with sulfentrazone products (blindside & dismiss) for overall general weed control. Crabgrass I reach for Quinclorac. but it works and is a little cheaper

If you mix it with label rate of triclopyr it won’t turn many of the weeds white — brown instead. Including poa. I don’t know for sure if the triv is dead but it sure looks dead. Sprayed some of that on Aug 20. It’s brown. Lots of brown bentgrass too.

Fescue is very tolerant of 8 oz per acre rate unless it’s stressed. Stressed fescue will get white but (usually :)) recovers.

For seeding, im almost possitive it works as a PRE as well as a post without sacrificing new grass meaning its one of the few pre's you can use prior to seeding. Used it on some crab and nutsedge. Did OK w/ crab (would use quinclorac instead) and awesome on nutsedge. Use the max rate for a backpack (honestly cant remember the rate, maybe 1 tsp per gallon?)

If you are using the full rate for Mestrione you must inform your customers that one it will turn things white. It can also tip whiten the rye grass. Tell them after a few mowings this will go away. Be careful spraying in high heat. It will smoke fine fescue at full rates in the heat. Above 85. Be wary of bent grass in lawns. It smokes that also. How do I know this. Well let’s say I have had to aerate and seed a few lawns because I smoked the fine fescue. Love and learn. Ugh.
