Hello yall.

I run a landscape company in Metro Detroit and currently run a Toro Timemaster as my main lawnmower. I have a close relative on hold to join me with the work. The issue is I only have one mower so we decided to buy a used one... and what better mower is to buy than the same one you already have! I also know the ins and outs of the time master and enjoy using it as it's the perfect size for most yards.

We found a 2017 Toro Timemaster on FB marketplace with a blown motor for $200. We were thinking of buying it and putting a new engine on, is this a feasible option?

For more info, this model came with a Briggs and Stratton PXi 1000 engine producing 223cc & 10 ft. lbs. of torque (which can be brought for roughly $400 from Jacks Small Engines). I also have the option of putting in a different engine with similar specifications. Such as the Honda GCV200 engine producing 201cc & 9.4 ft. lbs. of torque (which can be brought for ?? from a local distributor), the Honda GXV390 engine producing 389cc & 17.8 ft. lbs. or torque (which can be brought for a hefty $950 at Jacks Small Engines). There is also the Kawasaki FJ180V KAI but it is very beefy and wouldn't look like it would fit, as well as many Kohler options that I am too lazy to link.

Just wondering what my best option is overall. All recommendations are appreciated/welcomed. Thanks in advance.

If you decide to move forward with this mower I can recommend the kohler command pro cv224cc. I yanked the perfectly fine fj180 off my Turfmaster immediately after buying and performed the swap. I greatly disliked the 30” mowers but if they work for you that’s awesome. Gxv390 is a poor choice, might as well be an oil tankers anchor as far as weight on an already hard to maneuver mower. The pullies, belts and probably everything else wouldn’t last very long with an engine making real power.

Best mower I’ve bought is the Snapper SW15/Ferris FW15, same exact deck clearance and everything is better. Just my personal opinion on using small mowers. The difference in productivity between the toro 30” and Ferris 32” is night and day, again, in my opinion. The Kohler 224cc is the torquiest motor I’m aware of in the ~200cc class.

The "replacement" B&S engine is not a bad engine for the money, and service parts are almost everywhere. Do the best you can until your budget allows you to move up to better equipment. My BIL had a small lawn care business and had two small consumer riders. He finally got zero turn...a consumer grade John Deere. He blew the motor his first season doing, what the unit was not designed to do.
