Briggs Vanguard 31 hp 47.3 lbs torque at 2200 rpms
Briggs Vanguard 35 hp 53 lbs torque at 2200 rpms
Kawasaki 29 44.2 lbs of torque at 2400 rpms
Kawasaki 27 43 lbs of torque at 2400 rpms
Kohler 27 42.7 lbs of torque at 3000 rpms
Kohler 28 44.8 lbs of torque at ??? rpms
I know the Kohler 27 & 28 and the Kawasaki 27 & 29 don't compare in power to the 31 Vanguard, not even close.

im not saying that the 29 kawi is wicked powerful but it is rated in the fx block serries @ 53 ftlbs that is really good. the 29 hp dfi kawi is 44 ftlbs which is in the same class as a 27 kohler etc. my 34hp kawi is a strong motor i am more than happy with it and after finnally cutting in dryer conditions today with it i dont believe ill need anymore power! this is the first time i have ever said this! lol. just for reference all the big block kawi motors are the fx series and the 28hp kawi kai motor is in fh kai serries just if anyone wants to look them up at kaw power:usflag:

Displacement 852cc (52 cu. in.)
Compression Ratio 8.2:1
Maximum Power 29.0hp (21.6 kW) / 3600 rpm
Maximum Torque 53.2 ft. lbs. (72.1 N•m) / 2200 rpm
Oil Capacity 2.1 U.S. qt. (2.0 liter) w/Filter
Dry Weight (without muffler) 105.0 lbs. (47.5kg)

I really like Kawasaki but they don't offer it above 29 hp on a Scag. I always wonder about the reliability of the Vanguards but after several years I'm not hearing of too many problems. I would have jumped on a 30HP plus Kawasaki Turf Tiger but for the deals they are making on the 35 Briggs it was just hard to pass up. I have a friend that is trying to buy two 37 hp Kawasaki Bobcats. I am really interested to see how they preform. But once you get above 30 Hp I don't feel the need for any more power. I can practically idle around a home at lower rpms now with little strain on the engine. It would be comforting to hear of a few Vanguards going 2,500 hours like the Kohlers and Kaws though.

i know they dont offer the fx block is the problem. ferris has the 37 country clipper and bobcat and a few others i really wanted that but the 34 is the same motor just detuned i think i am not sure though. i know if it eats more gas than what i have been going through they might want to think about that design mine is thirsty i havent gotten gpm yet but i think i am arround 1.5 atleaste i m not sure about the gas gauge on it it seems like it is slow to move then drops fast.

I know this an old thread and apparently nothing has changed with B&S/Vanguard's secrecy. Does anyone has the power curve for the Vanguard 32 hp (#543777) that is used on the Scag Cheetah? I am trying to compare this to the 31 hp Kawasaki (FX850V) on the same machine.

The 31 Kawasaki is 852 cc's (52 cubic inches) and the 32 Vanguard is 896 cc's (54.68 cu in). I can promise the Vanguard feels much stronger than the numbers show. Get a demo with each, it will not take five minutes to feel the power difference.

Go to my thread "Vanguard engine torque specs"

Just wanted to thank you for finding this and posting it. B&S sure didn't want people to be able to find it.
No, BS still makes it kinda hard to find specs most of the time and when they do, they aren't certified ratings by an outside source. like Kaw's are. You can't really go by those specs now. They were posted before the big lawsuit that made all many's correct their figures to true ratings.
