Whats your thoughts on a FS 55 trimmer. According to Stihl's website it is made for light commercial use. Thats would I be using it for. Right now I have 3 trimmers, one though is on its last leg and I want to get a replacement.

I don't need anything with a ton of power. I just want something lightweight, easy to start, and problem free.

If I want power I got my Shindy T270.

I would invest in at least the 90r as well, and not just because of the fact that it has more power. Yeah, it is more expensive, but it's design and build are worth it's weight in gold. The 4-mix engine on the 90 is a great design, has lots of low end torque combined with good fuel economy and reliability. The 90r has a solid steel shaft instead of a cable drive shaft such as the 55r. The 90r has many more anti-vibration features built into it making it much more uncomfortable for repeated or extended use. I have a 55r, and while it surprising does have a good amount of power for a home owner model, I can't wait to hock it out the window and get an actual commercial trimmer.

I was thinking about the cable vs the solid part. I know someone though who just replaced the cable with a solid rod.

Also how much did you pay for your FS 55 and how much for the FS 90r?

Anytime you feelin like hocking equipment out the window please let me know your address and what time.

only problem is the fuel caps....

there hard to reinstall and get broken very offten. and replacements are costly
I think I could live with that.

I have the 55...it's a great, dependable trimmer, even though it's classified as a "homeowner" trimmer. It does everything I need to do with plenty of power for heavier stuff. Most times I'm just above idle for general trimming.
It starts on 2-3 pulls and is not too bad on fuel either. I will run it until it craps out...lol.
I have the big 130 4-mix with all the attachments for a backup trimmer and a little Homelite for 2nd backup.

The only thing I would add is that the manufacturers should consider making a long shaft for us tall men...my back suffers a bit with these short shafted units....

Shindy is excellent trimmer.

Also the reason I'm asking about the fs 55 is because I found
a practically new one for 150.00

A new 55 will probably run you around $200, but I picked up mine for $150 and it looked like it just came out of the box. A new 90 you could probably get for around $300. Honestly, there really isn't anything wrong with the 55. If your in a pinch for money and need a trimmer, than the 55 will do the job. I just feel that a 90 or higher would be better all around model.

The FS 55 differs from the commercial trimmers in that it does not have the anti vibration padding the commercial units do, it also is harder to start and the plastic construction is cheaper. I would spend the $100 more and get the FS 90, it will last longer no matter how good you take care of the 55.

I have a 55 for a back up. They are fine and some people will grab it first because it is so light. My 55 has the old gas cap, nothing to tear up. I have a lot of hours on mine and it's been no more trouble than the commercial models, just not hardly as powerful and doesn't hold a lot of fuel.

Come on guys:laugh: what do you think of Stihl;) I have thousands of dollars invested in Stihl handhelds, what I reach for first. Yet I am still scared S*#?*less of their 4-Mix equipment, to many blown 4-mix engine's here:waving:. I will never invest in all 4-mix equipment:nono:. Stihl 2-stroke hedge trimmer's, weedeaters, chainsaws, and even their older BR420 blowers are just about bulletproof.

Our family has only purchased Stihl for weedeater's & chainsaws, and we have several chainsaws that are going on 30 years of use:)

Well put. its only $100. that should be like 3 of your lowest priced lawns, you make it in 3-4 hours (most). Cheapin out on equipment will only make you angry in the long run. I started out with brand new everything, exmark turf tracer, sthil br550 and fs 90r.....only maintenance is to have my blades sharpened
