Agreed: triclopyr. Clover, creeping charlie, wild violet are tougher weeds and normally require 2 treatments. I use a 2,4-D, dicamba, triclopyr (heavy on 2,4-D) 3 way for 1st dose, then followup 10 to 14 days later with straight triclopyr (Brushtox-61% triclopyr) diluted at .75 oz per gallon water.

I was thinking that as well. I did not spread fertilizer last year in the fall and noticed a large impact. In a couple weeks ill be putting down some 19-19-19 and then probably do a second round of this late spring so it gets a double dose.

Looking for a good suggestion on what herbicide to use. The 2-4d is good at killing dandelions but at most just burns clover slightly. 100% kbg lawn in mid michigan. Just sprayed the 2-4d and prodiamine wdg last week. Will fertilize in a few weeks when things green up. Thinking a triple weed killer would probably work better like triplet but looking for advice from the pros on what you would use. There may be a few other spots of grassy type weeds but clover is the majority.

Change up and msm turf should do the trick.

If you see Clover of any kind in the lawn, then the lawn is underfed. GIve it some fert.

MSM would knock out the clover within a week if the weather's right.

 

Also my yard is about 3 acres of grass so spraying herbicides is usually not cheap but if using a triple is a lot more effective to knock it out it is worth it. From what i was seeing it is about double the price of 2-4d.

 

I like straight triclopyr 4ec. 13 oz / acre is the rate I use, but I only spray it straight in the spring.

This should reduce the herbicide lost when it runs off the downward-slanting clover leaves. Treat when the clover is young and growing fast (early)!
Weather is about right for spraying new weeds in Michigan--as soon as the winds die down, that is.
Take a careful look in late summer--spray again to reduce clover problems the following spring.
Double check to be sure you are not identifying clover when it is really oxalis or black medic.

It looks like trimec also kills oxalis and black medic doesnt it?

 

Trimec Southern is said to be the most effective herbicide for clover. Look it up.

Updated photo of clover. Going to try some of the herbicides on a few areas. @Cardinal Lawn what do you think of the soil test and recommend for fertilizer?

 

I think I would apply something with 25-30% slow release at 0.5-0.75# of N and see how the turf responds. For the weed control try something with Triclopyr in it. Make sure soil has moisture and the temperature is below 80 degrees.

 

My first 2 blanket rounds I use sublime. Which has Triclopyr (29.5%), Dicamba (16.27%), and Mesotrione (5.20%). And I swear this product has been a game changer. Its only downside is sometimes it bleaches the fescue just a little bit. But thats only after temps start to pick up.

 

Been using Confront on clover and other problem turf weeds that 2,4-d just doesn’t touch. It’s expensive but the rates are low. I always use a sticker/spreader/ wetting agent with Confront.
